Democrats’ risky focus on torture

May 16, 2009

Barack Obama warned Democrats in Congress against making a partisan cause out of the Bush administration‘s harsh interrogation tactics.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is ignoring him — loudly — and the party, from the president on down, may pay the price.

So far, it’s Pelosi who’s suffered the greatest harm.

It may never be resolved exactly when she first learned that waterboarding had been used against terror suspects — in 2002 when she was the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee or five months later after she became her party’s leader.

But the Democrats’ claim to the moral high ground on the issue has been blemished by her explanation this week that in early 2003 she shifted her attention to winning political control of the House and didn’t wage a protest against what she now calls torture.

PelosiTruthGate: Did CIA Lie About Torture To Congress? Time To Find Out Or Fire Pelosi

May 15, 2009

If the Central Intelligence Agency, the nations top intelligence collection agency, is or has been lying the Congress, that is one of the most serious dangers in our democracy.

If the Congress is not fulfilling its role in “oversight” and “checks and balances” that is an equally serious allegation.

And if the Speaker of the House, any Speaker of the House, is lying about such a serious national security matter, that Speaker needs to step down.

This is now a new Watergate. PelosiTruthGate.

If the CIA lied about torture, did it lie about the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq?  Did we go to war based upon a lie?

This is serious stuff.  Nothing could be more serious.

We need to get to the bottom of this.

It’s now that simple.

The New York Times buried this story on page A18 today: which removes this organization from the realm of honest journalism.

The nation’s largest left-wing newspaper is counting its last days

Meanwhile, the Washington Post, to its credit, has prepared a special editorial on the CIA-Pelosi-Truth affair, which is on the Internet now and will appear in print on Saturday.

This is a big issue and a big story, and even the White House is hoping it will (and trying to make it) go away.

Which means we have even more reason to get to the bottom of this serious issue…..

FOX News’ Major Garrett was the first and only reporter to ask Press Secretary Robert Gibbs what the White House’s reaction is to Nancy Pelosi’s accusation that the C.I.A. lied to her. Gibbs said President Obama is “keeping the American people safe by looking forward.” Garrett reminded Gibbs this is a serious matter, leading Gibbs to respond that he will not “R.S.V.P” to get involved.  See Video:

Obama Was Against Military Tribunals Before He Was For Them

May 15, 2009

And Gitmo will be open a lot longer than promised too….

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama on Friday restarted a Bush-era military trial system for a small number of Guantanamo detainees, reviving a method of prosecution he once assailed as flawed but with new legal protections for terror suspects.

In a three-paragraph White House statement, Obama announced the decision that already has drawn criticism from liberal groups, arguing that it will ensure a legitimate forum to prosecute alleged terrorists being held at the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

“This is the best way to protect our country, while upholding our deeply held values,” the president said in a statement.

Obama had criticized the system established by President George W. Bush, and in his statement, he said it had only succeeded in prosecuting three suspected terrorist in more than seven years.

Gingrich On Pelosi: ‘Lied,’ ‘Despicable,’ ‘Dishonest,’ ‘Vicious,’ “Incompetent”

May 15, 2009

In an interview with ABC News Radio’s Marcus Wilson, Gingrich, R-Ga., said Pelosi, D-Calif., “has lied to the House” in claiming that she was never briefed by the CIA about the Bush administration’s use of waterboarding and other harsh tactics.

“I think she has lied to the House, and I think that the House has an absolute obligation to open an inquiry, and I hope there will be a resolution to investigate her. And I think this is a big deal.  I don’t think the Speaker of the House can lie to the country on national security matters,” Gingrich said.

He continued: “I think this is the most despicable, dishonest and vicious political effort I’ve seen in my lifetime.”

“She is a trivial politician, viciously using partisanship for the narrowist of purposes, and she dishonors the Congress by her behavior.”

“Speaker Pelosi’s the big loser, because she either comes across as incompetent, or dishonest.  Those are the only two defenses,” Gingrich said. “The fact is she either didn’t do her job, or she did do her job and she’s now afraid to tell the truth.”

Senator Questions Pelosi’s Motivation to Attack American Intelligence System

May 15, 2009

The top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee is calling House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s accusation that the CIA misled her and others about waterboarding a massive attack on the nation’s intelligence community.

Associated Press

Sen. Kit Bond of Missouri on Friday contradicted Pelosi’s claim and called her criticism a tragedy. Bond said in a “Today” show interview that he reviewed the CIA’s material and it was clear that she had been informed about the enhanced interrogation method.

From ABC News

“It’s outrageous that a member of Congress should call a terror-fighter a liar,” said Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., the vice chairman of the Senate intelligence committee. “It seems the playbook is, blame terror-fighters. We ought to be supporting them.”

Bond questioned Pelosi’s claim that the speaker could do little to influence the Bush administration, saying that when lawmakers are briefed, they can ask for more information and also voice their displeasure or disagreement to the speaker or other leaders in the House.

“It’s no excuse to say, ‘I was powerless.’ That’s what oversight is all about,” he said. “There are a whole range of actions, and she did not take them.”

The Speaker misspeaks

May 15, 2009

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, her eyes wide, her hands gesticulating wildly, on Thursday laid out a third version of what she knew and when she knew it about the Bush administration’s interrogation policies, edging ever closer to debating what the meaning of the word “is” is.

With even her own second-in-command now demanding more answers, the California Democrat, her voice barely audible at times, read a rambling statement at her weekly press briefing about her prior knowledge of the “enhanced interrogation techniques” (EITs) employed under President Bush, insisting that she was not told in a September 2002 briefing that the U.S. government used waterboarding.

Minutes later, though, she acknowledged for the first time that her top security adviser had learned details of a February 2003 briefing in which lawmakers were told that American interrogators were in fact waterboarding suspected terrorists.

“My statement is clear, and let me read it again. Let me read it again I’m sorry I have to find the page,” said a flustered Mrs. Pelosi, shuffling through papers, her hands quivering a bit, as she sought to stick to her prepared text.

“When when when my staff person I’m sorry, the page is out of order five months later, my staff person told me that there had been a briefing informing that there had been a briefing and that a letter had been sent. I was not briefed on what was in that briefing; I was just informed that the briefing had taken place,” she said.

Pelosi’s Self-Torture; An Unforced Error

May 15, 2009

“An unforced error” is what columnist Fred Barnes called Pelosi’s attack on the CIA yesterday — a day Pelosi chose to make herself the poster child on how Congress doesn’t work.

In the system of checks and balances, the Executive makes decisions based upon laws made by Congress and judged by the judiciary.

In this case, the Bush White House moved quickly to prevent further attacks after 9/11 and asked the Justice Department for their opinion.  Then the executive had the responsible agency, the CIA, brief Congress to allow the system of checks and balances to work.

No objections came from the Congress at the time — between 2002 and 2003 — but now Nancy Pelosi objects.  At first she objected that she wasn’t briefed.  She was.  Now she objects that the CIA lied.  It didn’t.

So now the top Democrat in the Congress, the Speaker of the House, the next in line for the presidency should the president and vice president perish, has created a problem for herself and shown all 6th grade students of American government exactly how it is not supposed to work….

From The Wall Street Journal

Given House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s acknowledged skill at torturing the Bush Administration in recent years, it no doubt afforded her critics some pleasure yesterday to watch her twist in the wind in front of the press over what she knew and when about the CIA’s terrorist interrogations. With mockery even from Jon Stewart on Comedy Central, Mrs. Pelosi has turned herself into a spectacle about a subject that she and fellow Democrats had themselves reduced to a spectacle of demagogic accusation and blame, repeatedly threatening to put Bush officials in the dock for “condoning torture.”

Pelosi Squashes Obama’s Message

May 14, 2009

Thanks to Nancy Pelsoi, this may be the first day since Barack Obama’s inauguration last January that the president didn’t get any attention.

The lead story from the U.S. on the BBC today?  “Pelosi Says the CIA Lied.”

Go around the globe and check all the media stories.  We just dare you to find President Barack Obama’s assault on the evils of credit card companies.

The president has been pushed out of the public eye by Nancy Pelsoi.

This must be torture for Obama.  It’s like getting waterboarded by your own team.

The global media is drowning in stories about Pelosi.

Pelosi Derails Obama Agenda; Obama Needs To Ask Her To Resign

May 14, 2009

Madame Speaker, please resign now.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has now become more than a distraction.  She has risen above that.  Pelosi is now a dangerous distraction to the Obama agenda that gives life to the Republicans and emboldens dissent on every issue she and the Democrats are pushing.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she was misled about the use of "enhanced interrogation techniques."

Above: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she was misled about the use of “enhanced interrogation techniques.”

The president needs to ask Pelosi to resign. Now.

Pelosi is doing more harm than the former head of GM, who Obama gleefully discharged.

From May 19:
Pelosi Is Now Obama’s Biggest Anchor, Liability

If Obama does not do that — if he fails to ask Pelosi to step down or he delays action — he will harm his own chances of future success.

Keeping the interrogation debate fueled, as Pelosi did today, can easily kill all chances to get a health care bill this year.

If the president asks for Pelosi to resign, he still has some hope of getting his agenda and his administration back on track.

Pelosi took the lead on the “stimulus” earlier this year, and so far Obama has not taken any heat for the sorry details contained in that bill.

Now Pelosi has said she’ll be the lead sled dog on health care: which should not please Obama, Rahm Emanuel or any red blooded American one bit.

This is a time for Democrat discipline — a trait that party is not known for.

By keeping Pelosi, Obama risks undisciplined, lurching action in the House of Representatives — where he enjoys a huge Democrat majority that should be translating into rapid fire, disciplined action on all front.

In stead, it is now a safe bet that Republicans will join Pelosi in her request for a “Truth Commission” — and that train can go in any number of uncontrollable and unpredictable paths.

Pelosi has mixed politics and national security and national intelligence issues into an untenable Gordian Knot.

Her own staff has already threatened other Democrats not to initiate ethics complaints.

Pelosi has only been allowed to continue her questionable practices because of an understanding, all Obama loving media.

Ms. Pelosi has abused her office and sacrificed what little confidence the American people had in the Congress to change the tone and move forward: not look back.

And she has done so by lying and by asking us all to lose trust and faith in the American intelligence service…..
