Governors of Texas, South Carolina to Host “Tea Party 2.0” This Week

May 12, 2009

Hoping to recapture the grassroots energy of last month’s “tea parties,” Republican Govs. Mark Sanford of South Carolina and Rick Perry of Texas will host a tele-town hall Thursday that’s being dubbed “Tea Party 2.0.”

Gov. Rick Perry, Texas

The Republican Governors Association said it is expecting 30,000 people to participate in the town hall, which will take place roughly one month after the much-publicized anti-tax tea party rallies held in hundreds of locations across the country on April 15, the tax filing deadline.

Sanford and Perry will each speak for several minutes before opening up the town hall to up to an hour-long question and answer session.

States Acting Like Tea Party Goers: Fighting Obama’s Spending, Borrowing Recovery Plan: Want Tax and Spending Cuts; Resisting Stimulus

May 9, 2009

There seems to be a real standoff in the works between states that can’t spend and borrow more and the president who has staked his reputation and the recovery on the premise that spending and borrowing is the path toward economic recovery…Four or five states is not a revolt but it bears watching…
.
We reported here yesterday an interesting turn of events in California.  Cash strapped, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger pushed ahead with wage cuts for unionized home healthcare workers approved in February by state lawmakers as part of the state budget.

Then the Obama administration threatened to rescind billions in stimulus money if Gov. Schwarzenegger and lawmakers did not restore those wage cuts….

In other words, Obama is doing the same thing to California that he is doing to the auto and banking industries. Do what we want, because we gave you money. You took money, therefore we own you. The citizens of California are unimportant. The projects that would be paid for with the $7 billion, also not important. The taxpayers, many yet to be born, that are paying for the stimulus cash, definitely not important. The home health care union workers, who I’m sure would rather take a pay cut than lose their jobs, they’re important.

However, they are important only to a certain extent. The workers belong to SEIU, which is a branch of ACORN. As reported in the L.A. Times….

Now in Minnesota, lawmakers (Democrats who control the Minnesota Legislature) confronted GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty with a $1 billion tax-for-spending trade-off he promised to veto…

Pawlenty did veto the bill this morning, setting the stage for a potential override attempt.

Georgia Joins Other States Seeking “Sovereignty”

May 7, 2009

Hendrik Hertzberg flags a Georgia state Senate resolution, which I also missed, that appears aimed at opening the door for secession.

In the case of “[f]urther infringements on the right to keep and bear arms,” says the resolution, “[A]ll powers previously delegated to the United States of America by the Constitution for the United States shall revert to the several States individually. Any future government of the United States of America shall require ratification of three quarters of the States seeking to form a government of the United States of America and shall not be binding upon any State not seeking to form such a government.”

This seems to be a bit of a trend: Oklahoma’s Legislature this week overrode Gov. Brad Henry’s veto to pass a “sovereignty” resolution, and similar moves are afoot in Georgia and South Carolina.

The Tenth Amendment Center (tagline: “the powers not delegated …”), which supports and tracks these move, lists bills introduced in 35 states, most a bit less blunt about dissolving the union than Georgia’s. They’ve passed at least one body of the legislature, according to that list, in 10 states: North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Georgia, Indiana, Idaho, Tennessee, Missouri, Montana (where it eventually failed) and Alaska, where Gov. Sarah Palin will decide whether to sign.

The Alaska resolution, which is fairly standard, “serves as Notice and Demand to the federal government, as our agent, to cease and desist, effective immediately, mandates that are beyond the scope of these constitutionally delegated powers;

Oklahoma: federal government should “cease and desist” mandates beyond the scope of its powers

May 6, 2009

Although Gov. Brad Henry vetoed similar legislation 10 days earlier, [Oklahoma] House members Monday again approved a resolution claiming Oklahoma’s sovereignty.

Unlike House Joint Resolution 1003, House Concurrent Resolution 1028 does not need the governor’s approval.

The House passed the measure 73-22. It now goes to the Senate.

“We’re going to get it done one way or the other,” said the resolutions’ author, Rep. Charles Key, R-Oklahoma City.

“I think our governor is out of step.”

House Democrats objected, saying the issue already had been taken up and had been vetoed, but House Speaker Pro Tempore Kris Steele, R-Shawnee, ruled the veto is not final action.

Key said he expects HCR 1028 will pass in the Senate. HJR 1003 earlier passed the House 83-18 and won approval in the Senate 29-18.

Henry vetoed HJR 1003 because he said it suggested, among other things, that Oklahoma should return federal tax dollars.

Key said HCR 1028, which, if passed, would be sent to Democratic President Barack Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress, would not jeopardize federal funds but would tell Congress to “get back into their proper constitutional role.” The resolution states the federal government should “cease and desist” mandates that are beyond the scope of its powers.

Key said many federal laws violate the 10th Amendment, which says powers not delegated to the U.S. government “are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.” The Constitution lists about 20 duties required of the U.S. government, he said.

Congress should not be providing bailouts to financial institutions and automakers, he said.

“We give all this money to all these different entities, including automakers, and now they’re talking about, ‘Well maybe it’s better to let them go bankrupt,’” Key said. “Well, maybe we should have let them go bankrupt before we gave them the money.”

Texas Doesn’t Need To Leave the Union, Obama’s State Department Lists the State Among Foreign Nations Already

April 25, 2009

Hillary Clinton’s travel itinerary on her State Department web site highlights her trips to foreign nations including Texas.

After reporters caught the gaffe the State Department revised the site’s page.

Just more than one year ago Hillary won the Democrat primary for president of the United States in Texas, which may be why the Obama Administrations lists that state among “foreign” nations.

Or it could be that Texas is now so over run with illegal Mexan migrants that Texas is now just considered “North Mexico” by team Obama….

Or maybe Governor Rick Perry’s idea to pull Texas out of these United States caused the Obama government to act preemtively….

Or maybe…..

You can’t make this stuff up!

Politico Gushes Over Obama

Barack Hussein Obama is the nation’s first hip president.

This, of course, is subject to debate. But watch him walk. Listen to him talk. See the body language, the expressions, the clothes. He’s got attitude, rhythm, a sense of humor, contemporary tastes.

This much is clear: Whether dealing with the Wall Street mess, shifting troops from Iraq to Afghanistan or fumbling to fill his Cabinet, Obama leans heavily on personal panache to push political policies.
