Obama Wants Empathy in Supreme Court: If the People and Media Like You Can You Then “Get Away With Murder”?

May 2, 2009

Empathy in the Supreme Court.  What is that exactly?  If a man found guilty of murder is likable and his case reaches the Supreme Court, do we want the court to ignore all lower courts and the law?  Do we want a ruling on heart and media likability or do we want blind justice and law?

More and more we at Peace and Freedom wonder about who Barack Obama really is.

We wonder about the president’s many dichotomies.

We wonder about the president’s real role in the case of  U.S. Navy SEAL snipers killing three Somali pirates to rescue Captain Phillips.

It just seemed (and seems more so now) that Obama’s authorization of the use of such force — executions really — was an act of “rights denial” totally out of character for this President of the United States.

It certainly lacked empathy.

And why no flurry of Obama hugging Phillips or taking more of a stand against pirates? Methinks the pirates do get in the way too much.  And by killing three pirates — an act Obama cannot be proud of if he really has empathy at all — the president has shown us real inner weakness.  He maybe doesn’t care so much about the little guy, his situation and his needs.  Obama cares first and foremost about himself.  Pirates and the plight of Somalia are really a distraction — as is darfur and other areas of torment and blight.

The only torment President Obama wants Americans thinking about now is George Bush and his handling of everything — especially those who were “tortured.”

But isn’t death by sniper a torture?  A denial of rights?  A denial of the right to life?

Obama has spoken about negotiating with the “moderate” Taliban, has removed the word “terrorist” from the national lexicon, has reached out to Iran even as that nation’s president denies the Holocaust and marches toward a nuclear weapon.  He’s the president who has called waterboarding terrorists “torture.”  And now, the president of such great heart, love and understanding wants that same kind of empathy in his Supreme Court nominee.

Yet he authorized the execution of three Somali teen-agers who had held hostages before and never harmed or killed one.  And this happened during negotiations.

Certainly, death by sniper lacks empathy, denies rights and is a form of torture?

More Somali pirates have died at the hands of this White House than Americans have died from the flu…..And the media — any media —  refuses to chase after this story…..

I think there are serious ethical and moral issues here and the dichotomies of Barack Obama never cease to amaze us….

It’s almost as if a guy that the public and the media likes can get away with murder….

And that’s why we want a “justice is blind” Supreme Court….

Our Jekyll and Hyde President

Will the real Obama stand up?  Is the real president the one joking with Hugo Chavez and sending a video to Iran’s Ahmadinejad?  Or is he really the guy that executed three Somali pirates who had never before hurt any captives?

National Review

In matters of foreign policy during the president’s first 100 days, we have seen two Barack Obamas.

Consider “Obama I.” After taking office, the president gave his first interview to the Dubai-based Al-Arabiya TV station, and listed various sins of America while praising the Saudi king as courageous.

On trips abroad since then, Obama I has continued to apologize for the U.S. being arrogant and dismissive of Europe. He thinks we have been inconsiderate to Mexico. And, judging by a speech he gave in Prague, we apparently carry a special burden to eliminate nuclear weapons since we ended World War II by using them.
.
Obama I seems far kinder to our rivals than to the prior Bush administration when he assures various South American thugs and Iranian and Russian strongmen that he represents a sharp break from a recent, unfortunate American past.

Obama I sat quietly for nearly an hour while Nicaragua’s thuggish leader, Daniel Ortega, trashed the U.S. at the recent Summit of the Americas. Instead of defending his country, the president, in his call to move forward, replied that he was only three months old at the time of our alleged misdeeds in Cuba — and therefore not responsible for them.

Most maddening, Obama I released classified memos about past enhanced interrogation techniques — over the objections of former CIA directors from both parties.

But there has been another Obama as well. This more centrist “Obama II” kept Bush appointee Robert Gates as secretary of Defense. He named no-nonsense Gen. James Jones national-security adviser.

Most of the campaign rhetoric about leaving Iraq on a strict timetable has been scrapped. Instead, the Bush-Petraeus plan of withdrawal based on conditions on the ground continues.

Obama sent more combat troops to Afghanistan, while trying in vain to get the Europeans to fulfill their NATO obligations by doing the same. Despite the hostile anti-Bush rhetoric, Obama has kept intact many of his predecessor’s homeland-security measures. There has been little change with the Patriot Act, wiretap and e-mail intercepts of suspected terrorist communications, and renditions of overseas suspects.

Obama II gave the green light to execute suspected Somali pirates who were holding an American hostage. And in the case of our continued Predator drone attacks in Pakistan, such bombings are a little more extreme than waterboarding known terrorists.

There could be several explanations for our split-personality president.

In Pirate Shooting, Some say Obama Took Ownership for Somalia

April 19, 2009

Like it or not, one week ago Barack Obama authorized and achieved the execution of three Somali pirates.

Experts say the only way to stop the pirates is to establish and maintain a “rule of law” government in Somalia.

Like it or not, one week ago it seems, Somalia became Obama’s War, just as he has immersed America further into Afghanistan….

But don’t take Newsweek at full value.  After all, they’ve already called Afghanistan “Obama’s Vietnam”….

By Mark Hosenball
Newsweek

It was a hit with the U.S. public, but president Obama’s decision to authorize the Pentagon to kill three Somali pirates who took an American sea captain hostage sent shudders through the world’s shipping and insurance industries. Because the pirates are motivated chiefly by money, maritime experts say, they have—at least until now—taken good care of the crews they hold captive. A document retrieved from a ship hijacked last year contained a “list of written rules” of conduct pirates had to follow, according to a maritime security expert who requested anonymity when discussing sensitive material. The document included a series of “punishments” to be imposed on any hijacker who struck a hostage.

Shipping companies and insurers are far more likely to fork over large ransoms if they have confidence that their personnel and cargo will be released unharmed, and while the scourge of piracy has been disruptive, so far there have been virtually no casualties among innocent people. According to estimates, there were 111 pirate attacks off the Somali coast in 2008; 42 were successful, resulting in the capture of 815 seamen. As of last week, according to one estimate, all but 37 had been released, and two had died—one reportedly of illness. Experts say the rate of attacks has increased sharply this year, and “the more [authorities] shoot, the more the pirates will shoot back,” says Tom Wilson, a Somalia analyst for the British consulting firm Control Risks.

Protecting the 23,000 merchant vessels sailing annually near the Horn of Africa would require a naval fleet of at least 60 ships, according to U.S. government and private experts; the existing international antipiracy task force has about 20. And attacking the Somali coastal villages where the pirates are based could potentially radicalize generations of Somalis. “That would be a 19th-century solution,” says Neil Roberts, a marine insurance expert with Lloyd’s Market Association in London. Industry experts say the only solution to piracy is the creation of a viable Somali government back on dry land.

From  The New York Times:
.
For Mr. Obama, the episode ended successfully with the precision takedown of three pirates with three bullets and the recovery of Captain Phillips generally unharmed.

But the operation on the waters off the Horn of Africa may presage a more complicated challenge for a president already trying to end a war in Iraq and win another in Afghanistan. Somali pirates have vowed to take revenge on Americans, and they have demonstrated in recent months their ability to seize ships from all sorts of countries with impunity.

Obama First 100 Days: What’s Been Lost and What’s Been Gained?

April 19, 2009

We are almost at the end of the first three months of the Obama Administration and it is getting time to ask what may have been gained and lost thus far.

As Mr. Obama is particularly active in his agenda, and he enjoys great popularity and a Democrat controlled congress, he may have more dramatic changes at this early stage in his presidency than in that of say Millard Fillmore.

From the L.A. Times:
Obama’s First 100 Days

Much of what has been gained and lost was on display this last week.

It seems that trust from a segment of the voting population was lost, as exhibited both by protesters in the streets at Tea Parties and the release of the Administration’s memo condemning them as right wing extremists.

Mr. Obama is a polarizing president — perhaps the most polarizing ever.

It seems to us that Pakistan may have been lost or is on a slippery slope and Isreal is not yet lost but certainly is showing signs of concern.

Many years of negotiating with North Korea has been lost….

But just think of all the new allies gained: Hugo Chavez, Daniel Ortega, the Taliban, Iran’s Ahmadinejad (maybe) and perhaps others.

Obama Is President Disorder, Irony and Non Sequitur

April 17, 2009

I find it stragely ironic that the President of the United States that has asserted that he is the one ready for negotiations with any and all bad guys including Iran and North Korea ordered the death of three Somali pirates during a negotiation.  The President of the United States so shocked by the “torture” of Gitmo has decided to close the place entirely and to release  Bush-era memos about CIA interrogation techniques.

Why?

To trash Bush, which seems to be the Obama mantra thus far?

Politico reported:

A former top official in the administration of President George W. Bush called the publication of the memos “unbelievable.”

“It’s damaging because these are techniques that work, and by Obama’s action today, we are telling the terrorists what they are,” the official said. “We have laid it all out for our enemies. This is totally unnecessary. … Publicizing the techniques does grave damage to our national security by ensuring they can never be used again — even in a ticking-time- bomb scenario where thousands or even millions of American lives are at stake.”

“I don’t believe Obama would intentionally endanger the nation, so it must be that he thinks either 1. the previous administration, including the CIA professionals who have defended this program, is lying about its importance and effectiveness, or 2. he believes we are no longer really at war and no longer face the kind of grave threat to our national security this program has protected against.”

And then why, if such “torture” is so deplorable, does the same man execute without due process three Somali pirates?  With all due respect to Captain Phillips and the hero of the U.S. Navy who pulled the trigger, how many people have the pirates killed and harmed in the past?

The answer is zero.

Death by sniper’s bullet is clearly torture and the ultimate denial of rights, it seems to me.  What has happened at Gitmo?  I’m not nearly as certain….

I am confused and concerned about President Obama….

He seems to be the president of non sequitur (“it does not follow”).

The president is against automatic weapons and the drug trade that has made the border with Mexico so dangerously violent.  So he went to Mexico and then left again without any new pledge againsts drugs, guns or a lawless border.  Non sequitur.

He wants to clean up the financial system and see the economy thrive but he has launched upon a debt supported spending binge and continues to attacks bankers, Wall Street and even fired the head of GM.  Non sequitur.

He wants to attack the economy and make it well but there is none of the job creation and building projects of the FDR years — he has linked recovery to health care, education and climate change.  Non sequitur.

Maybe I don’t “get it.”  Or maybe the president doesn’t get it — which really worries me….

Obama Amid the World Of Disorder

By George Neumayr
American Spectator

Modern liberals measure “progress” not by the unfolding fulfillment of the natural moral law but by its elimination. Consequently, most of what is labeled “progress” is basically just regress, a return, under a glossier guise, to the practices of antiquity and pre-Christian paganism.

Pagans stuck the inconvenient elderly on snow drifts; moderns dehydrate them to death in hospitals. Pagans left unwanted babies to die on hilltops; moderns bury them in bins behind Planned Parenthood clinics. Pagans attended orgies, moderns attend “gay weddings.”

In its deepening moral squalor, in its raw defiance of reality as God made it, the Brave New World is as barbaric as the old one. That Hillary Clinton and other architects of the Brave New World are now forced to grapple clumsily with piracy is somehow fitting. Their “new world order” is intrinsically disordered, a reckless ideological experiment that explodes in recurring currents of chaos, discontent, and lawlessness. Why not piracy too?

The recent gusher of globalist babble at the G-20 summit is exposed by the rise of piracy as a total sham. And the rise of piracy is one more proof of Dambisa Moyo’s thesis in Dead Aid — that ceaseless Western government-to-government handouts to Africa, which are just a new version of white colonialism, have frozen the continent in a helpless and horrid past. After a trillion dollars over sixty years, the only vivid display of entrepreneurial activity in Africa today is…piracy.

Understanding Obama: Big Talk, No Action on North Korea and Iran; No Talk, Kills Pirates

April 14, 2009

If you are having trouble reading Barack Obama, think how Vladimir Putin, Hu Jintao,  Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran and Kim Jong-il of North Korea must feel.

The President of the United States was uncharicteristically silent during the Somali pirate hostage crisis: then he did what few would have predicted.  He executed two three Somali youths to free one American.

But at the same time he has made a lot of noise and speeches about North korea and Iran and backed but all that talk with no action whatsoever.  What is a dictator to think?

A central reporting convention commemorating the late state founder and “Great Leader” Kim Il-sung’s 97th birthday was held in Pyongyang, North Korea on Tuesday.  KCNA, via Reuters

****************************

During the tense days when ship captain Richard Phillips was held hostage by Somali pirates, President Obama wisely kept his mouth shut, letting operational people do what needed to be done.

Much less wise was his declaration the weekend before that, “Should North Korea decide to take this action [launch a long-range rocket], we will work with all interested partners in the international community to take appropriate steps to let North Korea know that they cannot threaten the safety and stability of other countries with impunity.” The action? None. We did not let the Japanese shoot down the rocket when it passed through their airspace. Predictably, the United Nations Security Council has done nothing either. Lesson: Don’t huff and puff unless you intend to blow the house down.

While We Watched Somalia, North Korea and Iran Moved Further Away From Nuclear Talks

While We Watched Somalia, North Korea and Iran Moved Further Away From Nuclear Talks

April 14, 2009

Lets not be politicically correct: on Easter Sunday the President of the United States executed three men while he was “negotiating” with them.

We applaud the freedom of Captain Phillips but don’t want to overlook a few facts: the Somali pirates have rarely hurt anyone and have never to our knowledge killed one person.

They want money and when the heat of warships arrives on the scene they have always removed themselves to other areas of the Somalie Coast, Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean.

The Somali pirates are lawless thugs: but they are also under age by U.S. legal standards; if that matters to anyone.  The pirate now in U.S. custody is believed to be between the ages of 14 and 16.

So we won’t hire a band to celebrate the Easter killing of three pirates mid-negotiation; even though we agree the freedom of Captain Philillips is a terrific thing….

So while much of the world was focued upon the Somali Shoot Down; what else was going on?

North Korea said it was pulling out of nuclear talks and the U.S. apparently agreed to allow Iran to keep its nuclear program going….
.
North Korea says it will quit talks aimed at disarming the country of nuclear weapons.

This comes as no surprise as North Korea has for years delayed, slowed and blocked the international efforts to stop its nuclear program.

Last week North Korea tested a long range ballistic missile.  The United Nations responded with a diplomatic rebuke that North Korea has now shrugged off.

North Korea carried out an underground nuclear test in 2006.

North Korea ignoring the United Nations demonstrates that the communiststate may be on a similar path as Irar.  Iran has a long range, decades old missile program and has discussed its nuclear ambitions often.  Western intelligence sources have confirmed a long scientific and technical relationship between North Korea and Iran.

With the Western world focused on Somali pirates and the U.S. negotiation with those pirates breaking down into sniper killings, it is no wonder that North Korea is moving away from the negotiation table….

The New York Times reported on April 13 that European allies have persuaded to U.S. to back away from demands that Iran shut down and open up its nuclear program.

By dropping a longstanding American insistence that Tehran rapidly shut down nuclear facilities during the early phases of negotiations over its atomic program, the allies hope a renewed negotiation can begin with Iran….

The Washington Times Reported on the DHS Document this way:

The Department of Homeland Security is warning law enforcement officials about a rise in “rightwing extremist activity,” saying the economic recession, the election of America’s first black president and the return of a few disgruntled war veterans could swell the ranks of white-power militias.

A footnote attached to the report by the Homeland Security Office of Intelligence and Analysis defines “rightwing extremism in the United States” as including not just racist or hate groups, but also groups that reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority.

“It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration,” the warning says.

The White House has distanced itself from the analysis. When asked for comment on its contents, White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said, “The President is focused not on politics but rather taking the steps necessary to protect all Americans from the threat of violence and terrorism regardless of its origins. He also believes those who serve represent the best of this country, and he will continue to ensure that our veterans receive the respect and benefits they have earned.”

Undeterred Somali pirates hijack 3 more ships

April 14, 2009

Undeterred by U.S. and French hostage rescues that killed seven bandits, Somali pirates brazenly hijacked three more ships in the Gulf of Aden, the key waterway that’s become the focal point of the world’s fight against piracy.

The M.V. Irene E.M. was hijacked early Tuesday, but it was not immediately clear where the ship is based or who owns it, two maritime security contractors said, speaking on condition of anonymity because it is a sensitive security issue.

From the Associated Press

The ship put out a distress signal shortly after midnight “to say they had a suspicious vessel approaching. That rapidly turned into an attack and then a hijacking,” one of the contractors told The Associated Press. “They tried to call in support on the emergency channels, but they never got any response.”

On Monday, Somali pirates also seized two Egyptian fishing boats in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia’s northern coast, according to Egypt’s Foreign Ministry. It cited a Somali diplomat in Cairo as saying there were 18 to 24 Egyptians onboard at the time.

The latest seizures come after Navy SEAL snipers rescued American ship captain Richard Phillips on Sunday by killing three young pirates who held him captive in a drifting lifeboat for five days. A fourth pirate surrendered after seeking medical attention for a wound he received in trying to take over Phillips’ vessel, the Maersk Alabama.

Obama First President Ever To Shoot Three Juveniles in Head During “Negotiation”

Obama First President Ever To Shoot Three Juveniles in Head During “Negotiation”

April 13, 2009

Pardon me for wondering what Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran and Kim Jong-il of North Korea are thinking tonight.  Both have been offered an opportunity to “negotiate” with the United States and therefore its new President, Barack Obama.

Obama has made a lot of talk about negotiating and even made a special video for Iran during the Persian New Year.

But the Obama record of international negotiation is now this: three dead by head shot and one saved by a ruse.  He’ll maybe go on trial because, well, Gitmo is closing and Eric Holder wants to host a trial.

Except he’s a juvenile; which makes where to hold the trial problematic in the extreme….

Many in my business get paid for determining “how the other guys might see this.”

While we at Peace and Freedom applaud the U.S. Navy for their work in freeing Captain Phillips; we don’t wonder at all what people are thinking in Iran and North Korea.  They now know what Republicans already learned.  Obama won.  Negotiations won’t be simple and easy.  And you may get it in the head. Or elsewhere…..

At the top of the U.S. government we have this guy, Rahm “Never Let A Good Crisis Go To Waste” Emanuel.  He probably predicted what the “head shots” would mean to the Obama legacy….

The fact that American “lawmakers” are busy passing bills that they haven’t read seems to go hand in glove with a White House that hasn’t thought through the implications of many things.  The Obama Bow to the Saudi King smacks of obeisance; defined as “bending the head or body or knee as a sign of reverence or submission or shame;” or “the act of obeying; dutiful or submissive behavior with respect to another person.”

Is this what the White House wanted?  It is what they got.

The Brit Prime Minister got movies on CD from the President of the United States: not a very symbolic gift.  One was “Star Wars.”  And nobody in the White House even checked to see if these CDs can be watched in the UK (they use different digital formatting: the CDs given by Obama are “blank” on UK machines).

Don’t forget, many Presidents of the United States do their work in the Oval Office on the “Resolute Desk” which is made from the timbers of a Royal Navy Warship.  That’s symbolism.

JFK among otheres used the “Resolute Desk” — a gift from the UK.  Obama returned one gift from the UK already this year: A statue of Sir Winston Churchill.  What does returning this mean?  Ask the White House staff.

The president gave the Queen of England an IPod — made in China.

The Secretary of State in this Obama Administration gave her Russian counterpart a giant red button which was supposed to be marked “reset.”  But the word was not spelled correctly or was just flat out the wrong word.  Besides:  to most Russians a giant red button is for launching nuclear weapons…..

So what are we resetting to with Russia?  Ask Joe Biden: it was his idea apparently to make the ‘reset” button.  Joe “Advisor to Many Presidents” Biden should have asked the staff to discuss with him how Vladimir Putin might reset — back to his KGB roots?

The point here is this: our president and his merry men seem unaware or too stupid to know that actions, even small ones, on the international stage, have meaning……
Was it Joe Biden, Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton that thought it was a good idea to encourage Russia to just hit the “reset” button?  Well, whoever…..

Let’s Talk: Pirate Episode Hurt Obama’s Negotiating Cred

April 13, 2009

When guys start to negotiate then get shot in the head: how many will follow them down the road of negotiating with the USA.  This is a good thing (maybe) for the USA but bad for President Obama is he really believes in negotiating.  He won’t find too many partners to play ball with in future talks…..It seems maybe the no negotiation position of past president’s may still work…..

***********************

I’m thrilled that the Somali pirates were killed, and the Maersk ship captain is safe. The Obama administration is claiming credit for giving the go-ahead for military action. But this presents Obama with a problem.

There are two choices when negotiating with hostage takers/pirates. One is the Israeli model of no negotiation. The only thing to be negotiated is the life of the hostage taker. Money, free passage, and other benefits are not on the table. The purpose of this approach is to deter further hostage takers, even if it means the death of the hostage.

The other model is the model of negotiating over almost any benefit, as long as the hostage is freed safely. This is the model Obama initially appeared to follow with the pirates. But if one believes the spin coming out of the White House, then negotiation was a ruse to buy time.

The problem is not in this case, which ended successfully, but in the next hostage taking situation. If one is going to follow a negotiation approach, the trust of the hostage takers in the negotiation process is key. If hostage takers believe negotiation is a ruse, then the hostage is in more danger. Words cannot be just words in a negotiation.

So negotiating as a ruse is the worst of all alternatives. It does not have the deterrent effect of the Israeli approach, or the hostage-safety effect of the negotiation approach.
