Chavez: Smiles, handshakes don’t change view of ‘imperialist’ U.S.

April 25, 2009

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Friday that despite his warm, smiling greetings with US President Barack Obama at the Americas summit, the US empire is still “alive and kicking.”

At the gathering of regional leaders last weekend in Trinidad and Tobago, one of the biggest stories was the friendly handshake between fierce US critic Chavez and Obama.

“The hand, yes. The smile, yes. But make no mistake, the empire is still there, alive and kicking,” Chavez said at a public event here.

“I hope that, for the good of his race, Obama is the last imperialist president of the United States.”

Chavez said the book he gave Obama — “The Open Veins of Latin America,” about the region’s colonial past and exploitation by the world’s big powers — was in response to what Obama said in Trinidad; that he came to talk about the future, not the past.

At the summit, Chavez — who maintained tense relations with the United States during the tenure of Obama’s predecessor George W. Bush — gave the impression he was seeking reconciliation with Washington, while Obama said he was open to talks with Cuba.

Book Chavez Gave to Obama Is Used as Core Text on Many College Campuses

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez wasn’t the first to discover the book he gave to President Obama last week in an attempt to ease diplomatic tensions — college students in the U.S. have been turning its pages for years.

The 317-page “Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent” has been identified on the syllabi of at least 20 U.S. colleges and universities since 2003, and it’s been taught for decades on American campuses.

The virulently anti-American book tells how for 500 years Europe and then the U.S. exploited Latin America, leaving it impoverished and governed by corrupt leaders.

It outlines how U.S. capitalistic forces purportedly raped the region’s natural resources and stymied Latin America’s own development, exploited trade agreements and tariffs for its own interests and victimized the people of the region in exchange for the U.S.’s industrial growth.

The left-leaning tome, reportedly ranked 54,295th on Amazon’s bestseller list before Chavez gave Obama a Spanish-language edition last week, skyrocketed to No. 2 on Sunday and has now “settled down” at No. 19.

Professors contacted by FOXNews.com praised the book — written by Uruguayan journalist Eduardo Galeano and first published in 1971 — for having a strong, accessible narrative style backed up by solid historical evidence.

Heads of Bolivia, Cuba, Dominica, Honduras, Nicaragua and Venezuela: Capitalism ‘threatens life on the planet’

April 25, 2009

We, the Heads of State and Government of Bolivia, Cuba, Dominica, Honduras, Nicaragua and Venezuela, member countries of ALBA, consider that the Draft Declaration of the 5th Summit of the Americas is insufficient and unacceptable for the following reasons:

– The Declaration does not provide answers to the Global Economic Crisis, even though this crisis constitutes the greatest challenge faced by humanity in the last decades and is the most serious threat of the current times to the welfare of our peoples.

– The Declaration unfairly excludes Cuba, without mentioning the consensus in the region condemning the blockade and isolation to which the people and the government of Cuba have incessantly been exposed in a criminal manner.

For this reason, we, the member countries of ALBA believe that there is no consensus for the adoption of this draft declaration because of the reasons above stated, and accordingly, we propose to hold a thorough debate on the following topics:

1. Capitalism is leading humanity and the planet to extinction. What we are experiencing is a global economic crisis of a systemic and structural nature, not another cyclic crisis. Those who think that with a taxpayer money injection and some regulatory measures this crisis will end are wrong. The financial system is in crisis because it trades bonds with six times the real value of the assets and services produced and rendered in the world, this is not a “system regulation failure”, but a integrating part of the capitalist system that speculates with all assets and values with a view to obtain the maximum profit possible. Until now, the economic crisis has generated over 100 million additional hungry persons and has slashed over 50 million jobs, and these figures show an upward trend.

2. Capitalism has caused the environmental crisis, by submitting the necessary conditions for life in the planet, to the predominance of market and profit. Each year we consume one third more of what the planet is able to regenerate. With this squandering binge of the capitalist system, we are going to need two planets Earth by the year 2030.

3. The global economic crisis, climate change, the food crisis and the energy crisis are the result of the decay of capitalism, which threatens to end life and the planet. To avert this outcome, it is necessary to develop and model an alternative to the capitalist system. A system based on:

If you had told me some of these Obama stories three months ago I would have said “impossible!”

April 24, 2009

Vice President Joe Biden got off the leash (again) today suggesting that people should avoid trains, subways and aircraft until the N1H1 (formerly swine) flu passes.

Biden was in trouble with airlines and everyone else for his dim bulb remarks.

The U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security got in trouble with U.S. military veterans and Canadians in just a few weeks time.  And refused to say the word “terrorists” at her confirmation hearigs.

Then she had to apologize to the American Legion.

Today she bailed out Joe Biden.  Where I come from, the U.S. Navy, juniors can’t bail out seniors.  Blame goes up the chain of command.  But Barack was busy bailing out Chrysler.  To hell with Biden.

If you had told me that three months ago I would have said “No Way!

Way….

Ed Morrissey at Hot Air said today, “Ironically, Barack Obama and the Democrats have started becoming French at the exact same time as the French have started becoming more American in economics … or at least more British…”

That is a hoot since Sarkozy said Obama was “unoriginal, unsubstantial and overrated.”

Sounds a lot like “overpaid, oversexed and over here.”

How about the President of the United States mugging with Hugo Chavez while hoding the numero uno anti-American text in the Latin American world — in Latin American history?

How about the first cabinet meeting (after 90 days) and bragging about saving $100 million?

Big deal.  No way.

How about Numero Uno flying to Iowa to give a 20 minute talk on energy conservation and then flying home?

How about insulting the PM of the UK and the queen for foolish, ill- conceived gifts, like an IPod made in China and DVDs that don’t work in Britain?

Or returning the bust of Sir Winston to Gordon Brown.  Ever hear of storage?  That’s what the Smithsonian is for: unwanted White House decor….

Or giving a giant red reset button to Russia with the word mis-spelled so it says “discount”?  Or was it “overcharge”?

If you told me a few months ago that the U.S. would barrow so much that China virtually owned the U.S. I would have asked: are you on drugs?

If you had said the government will own GM and Chrysler and most of the major banks I would have howled with laughter last Christmas….

Now that isn’t even funny….

If you had told me the U.S. economy was losing more than 600,000 jobs every month in 2009 I would have cried….

If you had told me the president suggested and the congress passed (without reading) the biggest government give-away of tax dollars in history and that didn’t even make a dent I can’t say what I might have done….

It is just too crazy….

If you had told me the president, this president, President Obama would pass and sign (in secret) a budget loaded with earmarks after he campaigned against earmarks I would have howled in protest….

If you had told me conservatives took to the streets with signs of protest?  I would have laughed out loud (LoL).

But if you had told me three months ago that Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank were saying stupid stuff left and right I would have said, “What’s new?”

If you had told me the president begged for forgiveness of the french for America’s arrogance?

Sac Le Bleu!

And that Sarkozy would stab Obama in the back?  That part I’d believe….

You can’t make this stuff up.  Leno should sue: Obama has all the good material….

Yup.

They are kidding, right?

Obama Remains Without Coherent Foreign Policy; Just “Love Me” Mania

April 24, 2009

In 1993, Bill Clinton joked, “Gosh, I miss the Cold War.” And, he explained, somberly: “We had an intellectually coherent thing. The American people knew what the rules were.”

By Jonah Goldberg
Townhall

Such Cold War nostalgia vexed many conservatives. It seemed to us that the Cold War consensus had broken down with the Vietnam War. Clinton himself didn’t much like that Cold War endeavor, which is one reason he worked so assiduously to avoid serving in it. A young John Kerry did serve, but he also threw away his medals and denounced his fellow servicemen as war criminals. Jimmy Carter, meanwhile, had proclaimed that he had no “inordinate fear of Communism,” suggesting that those who disagreed with him did.

The “intellectual coherence” of the Cold War didn’t stop many liberals from opposing Ronald Reagan’s foreign-policy efforts in Europe, the Caribbean and Central America, nor did it temper Hollywood’s ardor in portraying Reagan as a warmonger, a dunce or both. In the 1980s, the SANE/Freeze movement fired the minds of much of the Democratic Party. And when the Cold War ended without a shot fired, the left worked hard to give all the credit to Mikhail Gorbachev, since he seemed like a more reasonable fellow.

All of that comes to mind as I watch Barack Obama stroll across the globe apologizing for, or condemning, the sins of his predecessors and, by extension, his country.

After former Soviet pawn and now Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega berated the United States at a recent summit, President Obama joked, in reference to the failed Bay of Pigs operation, “I’m grateful that President Ortega did not blame me for things that happened when I was 3 months old.”

Ah, yes, because the pressing issue is Obama’s blamelessness, not the apparently embarrassing faux pas of America’s effort …

NBC’s Leftward Tilt, Fued With Fox Boils Into Shareholders Meeting

April 23, 2009

The hostility between Fox News Channel and MSNBC reached a fever pitch Wednesday when a Fox producer infiltrated the GE shareholders meeting.

Just before GE re-elected board members, company brass were hit with questions from shareholders critical of an alleged leftward political slant at MSNBC.

But one of those questions came from Jesse Waters, a producer on “The O’Reilly Factor” whose criticisms were cut short when his microphone was cut off, according to several attendees. Waters apparently did not publicly identify himself as a Fox employee.

Waters has built a reputation as an ambush interviewer, specializing in on-the-street confrontations. But this is arguably the boldest move by a Fox newsie to utilize the tactic inside their chief rival’s tent, as it were.

NBC Decides It Is All Obama All The Time (That Includes CNBC, MSNBC, GE…..Miss USA…Gay Marriage)

O’Reilly and MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann have been involved in a running feud for several years, but the pissing match between the two has of late started to envelope other parts of the News Corp. and GE empires.

GE pointed out that Waters had Fox News cameras waiting outside the Orlando meeting.

Attendees who spoke to THR said shareholders asked about 10 politically charged questions concerning MSNBC as well as one about CNBC.

First up was a woman asking about a reported meeting in which Immelt and NBC Uni CEO Jeff Zucker supposedly told top CNBC executives and talent to be less critical of President Obama and his policies.

Immelt acknowledged a meeting took place but said no one at CNBC was told what to say or not to say about politics.

During the woman’s follow-up question, her microphone was apparently cut off. A short time later, Waters asked a question and his mic was cut, too.

“The crowd was very upset with MSNBC because of its leftward tilt,” one attendee said. “Some former employees said they were embarrassed by it.”

When he got the floor, Waters focused his question about MSNBC on Olbermann’s interview of actress Janeane Garofalo, who likened conservatives to racists and spoke of “the limbic brain inside a right-winger.”

“He (Waters) was complaining that Olbermann didn’t bother to challenge her,” another GE shareholder said.

Immelt told the assembled he takes a hands-off approach to what is reported on the company’s news networks, which prompted a shareholder to criticize him for not managing NBC Uni more effectively.

Obama’s First 100 Days

April 19, 2009

Obama, nearing 100 days as president, sees the economic crisis as reason to reshape government, business and even everyday life.

On the last Friday in March, President Obama summoned leaders of the banking industry to the White House, where they gathered around a mahogany table in the State Dining Room, site of many a feast. On this day there was not a piece of fruit nor can of soda in sight. At each place was a glass of water. No ice. No refills.

The president’s message was hard and crusty as a slab of day-old bread.

By Faye Fiore and Mark Z. Barabak
The Los Angeles Times
April 19, 2009
.
He urged the bankers to view corporate excess through the eyes of Americans who are belt-tightening their way through the recession. Obama mentioned the carpet stains in the Oval Office, to make a frugal comparison with $1-million suites decorated with $8,000 trash cans.

The corporate chieftains protested, citing the specialization of their field and the need to pay handsomely to avoid a brain drain. Obama cut them off: “Be careful how you make those statements, gentlemen. The public isn’t buying that. My administration is the only thing between you and the pitchforks.”

Direct, assertive and utterly self-assured, Obama has used his broad popularity, a driving ambition and a sweeping agenda to move America in a wholly new direction.

Obama First 100 Days: What’s Been Lost and What’s Been Gained?

April 19, 2009

We are almost at the end of the first three months of the Obama Administration and it is getting time to ask what may have been gained and lost thus far.

As Mr. Obama is particularly active in his agenda, and he enjoys great popularity and a Democrat controlled congress, he may have more dramatic changes at this early stage in his presidency than in that of say Millard Fillmore.

From the L.A. Times:
Obama’s First 100 Days

Much of what has been gained and lost was on display this last week.

It seems that trust from a segment of the voting population was lost, as exhibited both by protesters in the streets at Tea Parties and the release of the Administration’s memo condemning them as right wing extremists.

Mr. Obama is a polarizing president — perhaps the most polarizing ever.

It seems to us that Pakistan may have been lost or is on a slippery slope and Isreal is not yet lost but certainly is showing signs of concern.

Many years of negotiating with North Korea has been lost….

But just think of all the new allies gained: Hugo Chavez, Daniel Ortega, the Taliban, Iran’s Ahmadinejad (maybe) and perhaps others.

Obama’s Suicide Machine: Economy, Spending, Debt (Education, Climate, Health Care)

April 18, 2009

Evoking one of Barack Obama’s favorite performers, Ben Stein today called the Obama tax and spend plan “Obama’s suicide machine.”

He said the president’s current plan to borrow more money to spend on education, health care and climate change makes no sense because it will accumulate too much debt.

“There is no correlation whatsoever that more spending means better academic achievement,” Stein added.

On the environment, the president urged people to look to Spain to see how environmental regulations created jobs.

Neil Cavuto said, “We did look at Spain and for every climate change job gained, two others were lost.”

“Making the nation more green is good for the economy is a fantasy,” said Terry Keenan.

This is also the first year that social security will pay out more than it takes in…..

Ben Stein appeared on Cavuto’s Saturday show on Fox, “Cavuto on Business.”

Many commentators are now saying even Republicans who voted for the stimulus and the TARP are feeling heat from voters alarmed about the spending and debt……

Obama’s Spending Plans Means Cuts In Other Areas Needed

By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer

Families are making tough decisions about their money and so too will their government, President Barack Obama said Saturday, promising that spending cuts are coming — and soon.

At a Cabinet meeting Monday, the president will ask department and agency heads for specific proposals for trimming their budgets.

“If were going to rebuild our economy on a solid foundation, we need to change the way we do business in Washington. We need to restore the American peoples confidence in their government — that it is on their side, spending their money wisely, to meet their families needs,” Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address, released while he attended the Summit of the Americans in Trinidad.

To help achieve his goal of an efficient government, Obama announced the appointment of Jeffrey Zients, a founder and managing partner of the investment firm Portfolio Logic, as chief performance officer. Zients, who also will serve as deputy director for management of the Office of Management and Budget, will work to streamline processes and cut costs.

On that front, Obama gave notice he wants to act quickly.

“In the coming weeks, I will be announcing the elimination of dozens of government programs shown to be wasteful or ineffective,” he said. “In this effort, there will be no sacred cows and no pet projects. All across America, families are making hard choices, and it’s time their government did the same.”

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is ending consulting contracts to create new seals and logos that, Obama said, have cost the department $3 million since 2003. Obama also cited Defense Secretary Robert Gates’ plan to overhaul contracting procedures and eliminate billions in wasteful spending and cost overruns.

The president praised Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Carl Levin, D-Mich., who are leading the effort in Congress.

Republicans have kept up a steady stream of criticism of Obama’s spending, both of his $787 billion stimulus plan and his $3.6 trillion budget proposal.

“Earlier this week, President Obama said that we need to get serious about fiscal discipline by trimming waste in the federal budget,” Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said in the GOP address. “Republicans couldn’t agree more. We want to work with the president to get our financial house back in order.”

“It’s irresponsible to borrow more than all previous American presidents combined. And it must stop if we want to get our economy moving again,” McCarthy said. “When will all this spending and borrowing end?”

Obama said he’s determined to try to cut costs.

“That is why I have assembled a team of management, technology and budget experts to guide us in this work,” he said, “leaders who will help us revamp government operations from top to bottom and ensure that the federal government is truly working for the American people.”

CNN’s Jack Cafferty Sounds Off On DHS “Right Wing” Report; Network Adds Nazi Flag Image

April 16, 2009

Yet another sign that when economic times are tough, things can get ugly: A new report suggests that right-wing extremism in the U.S. may be on the rise. The Department of Homeland Security says these groups might be using the recession and the election of the country’s first African-American president as tools to recruit members.
.
They say there’s “no specific information” on planned violence by domestic right-wing terrorists; but real-estate foreclosures, unemployment and tight credit could all lead to a “fertile recruiting environment.” There’s even the possibility of confrontations between these groups and government authorities.

The report says many right-wing extremists are antagonistic toward President Obama and his perceived policies on issues like immigration, expanding social programs to minorities and restrictions on owning guns.

It also points to concerns about anti-Semitism, saying some people are blaming the loss of jobs and home foreclosures on a conspiracy planned by a “cabal of Jewish financial elites.”

The report cites “lone wolves and small terrorist cells” as the biggest threat — because their low profile makes it hard to catch them before they act.

The Southern Poverty Law Center agrees that President Obama’s election may have boosted membership in some groups, but questions the link to the economy.

Meanwhile at least one conservative radio talk show host suggests that this report is meant to step on free speech and First Amendment Rights — which the Department of Homeland Security denies. It’s probably worth pointing out that the Obama administration also issued a warning about left-wing extremists in January.

Washington Times Says White House Backs Away From DHS Warning on Conservatives

Georgetown Honors Obama, Not Jesus (There Can Only Be One Messiah….)

April 16, 2009

Apparently there can only be one Messiah: and it isn’t Jesus.  When Barack Obama appeared at Georgetown University this week, a reference to Jesus was covered at the request of the White House….

***********************

Georgetown University says it covered over the monogram “IHS”–symbolizing the name of Jesus Christ—because it was inscribed on a pediment on the stage where President Obama spoke at the university on Tuesday and the White House had asked Georgetown to cover up all signs and symbols there.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the “IHS” monogram that had previously adorned the stage at Georgetown’s Gaston Hall was still covered up–when the pediment where it had appeared was photographed by CNSNews.com.

Messiah Obama Evokes “Sermon on The Mount” At Georgetown, But Anti-Abortion Advocates Don’t Cede High Ground

A Few Troublesome Signs For Obama

****************************

From The Washington Times
.
When President Obama gave his economics speech at Georgetown University on Tuesday, several folks noticed something was missing.

That “something” was an ancient monogram — the letters IHS — that symbolizes the name of Jesus. It was missing from a wooden archway above the dais in Gaston Hall where the president delivered his 45-minute speech.

The gold-lettered monogram appeared near a painting of three female figures — symbolizing morality, faith and patriotism — and decorative edging along the wall that spelled out the Jesuit motto “Ad majorem Dei gloriam”—”To the greater glory of God.” Georgetown was founded by the Jesuits.

Some of them may have been turning in their graves in the cemetery across campus at the sight of the missing monogram which looked like a blacked-out space above a blue backdrop and a row of American flags flanking the nation’s chief executive. Was Georgetown selling short its Catholic heritage, we wondered.

I contacted the university this morning to ask why the monogram — in this post-Easter season — was hidden as its absence had been noted by several bloggers, including Dawn Eden — formerly of the New York Post — on her dawn patrol blog

Julie Bataille from the university’s press office e-mailed me that the White House had asked that all university signage and symbols behind the stage in Gaston Hall be covered.

“The White House wanted a simple backdrop of flags and pipe and drape for the speech, consistent with what they’ve done for other policy speeches,” she wrote. “Frankly, the pipe and drape wasn’t high enough by itself to fully cover the IHS and cross above the GU seal and it seemed most respectful to have them covered so as not to be seen out of context.”

I also noticed the Free Republic blog had photos comparing “before” and “after” depictions of the unfortunate monogram, which the university covered with what looks like a black cloth.

Not every Catholic institution would have caved to quite this extent. Victor Nakas, spokesman for Catholic University, e-mailed me to say several presidents have visited CUA and the most recent administration official to speak there was then-Vice President Dick Cheney.

“I can’t imagine, as the bishops’ university and the national university of the Catholic Church, that we would ever cover up our religious art or signage for any reason,” Mr. Nakas wrote. “Our Catholic faith is integral to our identity as an institution of higher education.

I called the Rev. Thomas Reese, a senior fellow at the Woodstock Institute at Georgetown University, who was at the speech, as to what he thought.

“It is more for camera quality than anything else,” he surmised. “They don’t want distractions that would make the eye wander. I don’t think this is motivated by theology, but by communications strategy.”

Students “were dying to get into the hall,” he added. “There is this great enthusiasm for Obama especially among Catholic young people. The conservatives don’t know how to deal with this.

“The audience wanted to cheer and cheer this very professorial address. He played Professor Obama. He’s a damn good professor but not even he could make economics a barnraiser.”

What Others Are Saying:

Imagine if Obama were to give a speech at the Islamic Center of Washington, DC.   Would members of that community approve the covering of the Shahada?

Not only was this step taken by the White House advance team, Obama himself mangled a parable from the Sermon on the Mount about two houses, one built on sand only to be blown away in a storm, and another built on rock impervious to the swirling winds.

Notre Dame President Has No Problem With Obama On Abortions Because The Prez is Not Catholic?

University of Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins said in a letter to trustees that the university’s invitation to President Obama to deliver its commencement speech and receive an honorary degree is in keeping with “both the letter and the spirit” of a 2004 statement by U.S. bishops known as “Catholics in Public Life,” the AP/WSBT.com reports. Jenkins said that the university’s decision was based on an interpretation of the statement “supported by canon lawyers we consulted, who advised us that, by definition, only Catholics who implicitly recognize the authority of church teaching can act in ‘defiance’ of it.” Under this interpretation, “Catholics in Public Life” would not apply to Obama, who is Protestant.

Notre Dame President Explains Obama Invite

The University of Notre Dame’s selection of President Barack Obama as its commencement speaker follows the “letter and spirit” of a statement passed by U.S. bishops in 2004 and cited frequently by critics as a reason Obama should not have been invited, the school’s president says.

In a letter to trustees, the Rev. John Jenkins said university officials believe the statement, known as “Catholics in Political Life,” refers specifically to honoring Catholics whose actions are not in accord with the church’s moral principles. Obama is Protestant.

“This interpretation was supported by canon lawyers we consulted, who advised us that, by definition, only Catholics who implicitly recognize the authority of Church teaching can act in ‘defiance’ of it,” Jenkins wrote in the letter last week. “Moreover, fellow university presidents have told me that their bishops have told them that in fact it is only Catholic politicians who are referred to in this document.”

Archbishop “Appalled” By Obama Invitation; Position on Abortion at Issue

Indianapolis Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein has added his voice to “the chorus of faithful Catholics” objecting to the University of Notre Dame’s decision to make President Barack Obama the featured speaker at the school’s May 17 commencement.

In a letter to Notre Dame President the Rev. John I. Jenkins, Buechlein said he was “appalled and embarrassed” by the invitation, given that Obama’s views and actions on abortion and embryonic stem cell research are “blatantly opposed to the Catholic Church’s doctrine.”
