Obama Breaks (Another) Major Campaign Promise

May 16, 2009

“President Obama is reinstating the same deeply-flawed military commissions that in June 2008 he called an ‘enormous failure.’ In one swift move, Obama both backtracks on a major campaign promise to change the way the United States fights terrorism and undermines the nation’s core respect for the rule of law by sacrificing due process for political expediency.

 From Amnesty International

“Whatever revisions the Obama administration has made to the commissions do not change the fact that the commissions do not provide an adequate standard of justice for the detainees nor the victims of terrorism — they merely mock the U.S. Constitution, international laws and undermine fundamental human rights standards.

“What happened to President Obama’s confidence in the U.S. justice system’s ability to try detainees? He himself said that ‘we need not throw away 200 years of American jurisprudence while we fight terrorism.’

“U.S. federal courts are a perfectly sound system to try any and all detainees. They have brought other terror suspects to justice, and there is no reason why these courts cannot continue to do the same.”

PelosiTruthGate: Did CIA Lie About Torture To Congress? Time To Find Out Or Fire Pelosi

May 15, 2009

If the Central Intelligence Agency, the nations top intelligence collection agency, is or has been lying the Congress, that is one of the most serious dangers in our democracy.

If the Congress is not fulfilling its role in “oversight” and “checks and balances” that is an equally serious allegation.

And if the Speaker of the House, any Speaker of the House, is lying about such a serious national security matter, that Speaker needs to step down.

This is now a new Watergate. PelosiTruthGate.

If the CIA lied about torture, did it lie about the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq?  Did we go to war based upon a lie?

This is serious stuff.  Nothing could be more serious.

We need to get to the bottom of this.

It’s now that simple.

The New York Times buried this story on page A18 today: which removes this organization from the realm of honest journalism.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post, to its credit, has prepared a special editorial on the CIA-Pelosi-Truth affair, which is on the Internet now and will appear in print on Saturday.

This is a big issue and a big story, and even the White House is hoping it will (and trying to make it) go away.

Which means we have even more reason to get to the bottom of this serious issue…..

White House Works To Bury Pelosi-CIA Story, New York Times Complies

May 15, 2009

FOX News’ Major Garrett was the first and only reporter to ask Press Secretary Robert Gibbs what the White House’s reaction is to Nancy Pelosi’s accusation that the C.I.A. lied to her. Gibbs said President Obama is “keeping the American people safe by looking forward.” Garrett reminded Gibbs this is a serious matter, leading Gibbs to respond that he will not “R.S.V.P” to get involved.  See Video:

Gingrich On Pelosi: ‘Lied,’ ‘Despicable,’ ‘Dishonest,’ ‘Vicious,’ “Incompetent”

May 15, 2009

In an interview with ABC News Radio’s Marcus Wilson, Gingrich, R-Ga., said Pelosi, D-Calif., “has lied to the House” in claiming that she was never briefed by the CIA about the Bush administration’s use of waterboarding and other harsh tactics.

“I think she has lied to the House, and I think that the House has an absolute obligation to open an inquiry, and I hope there will be a resolution to investigate her. And I think this is a big deal.  I don’t think the Speaker of the House can lie to the country on national security matters,” Gingrich said.

He continued: “I think this is the most despicable, dishonest and vicious political effort I’ve seen in my lifetime.”

“She is a trivial politician, viciously using partisanship for the narrowist of purposes, and she dishonors the Congress by her behavior.”

“Speaker Pelosi’s the big loser, because she either comes across as incompetent, or dishonest.  Those are the only two defenses,” Gingrich said. “The fact is she either didn’t do her job, or she did do her job and she’s now afraid to tell the truth.”

Senator Questions Pelosi’s Motivation to Attack American Intelligence System

May 15, 2009

The top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee is calling House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s accusation that the CIA misled her and others about waterboarding a massive attack on the nation’s intelligence community.

Associated Press

Sen. Kit Bond of Missouri on Friday contradicted Pelosi’s claim and called her criticism a tragedy. Bond said in a “Today” show interview that he reviewed the CIA’s material and it was clear that she had been informed about the enhanced interrogation method.

From ABC News

“It’s outrageous that a member of Congress should call a terror-fighter a liar,” said Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., the vice chairman of the Senate intelligence committee. “It seems the playbook is, blame terror-fighters. We ought to be supporting them.”

Bond questioned Pelosi’s claim that the speaker could do little to influence the Bush administration, saying that when lawmakers are briefed, they can ask for more information and also voice their displeasure or disagreement to the speaker or other leaders in the House.

“It’s no excuse to say, ‘I was powerless.’ That’s what oversight is all about,” he said. “There are a whole range of actions, and she did not take them.”

Pelosi Squashes Obama’s Message

May 14, 2009

Thanks to Nancy Pelsoi, this may be the first day since Barack Obama’s inauguration last January that the president didn’t get any attention.

The lead story from the U.S. on the BBC today?  “Pelosi Says the CIA Lied.”

Go around the globe and check all the media stories.  We just dare you to find President Barack Obama’s assault on the evils of credit card companies.

The president has been pushed out of the public eye by Nancy Pelsoi.

This must be torture for Obama.  It’s like getting waterboarded by your own team.

The global media is drowning in stories about Pelosi.

Pelosi Derails Obama Agenda; Obama Needs To Ask Her To Resign

May 14, 2009

Madame Speaker, please resign now.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has now become more than a distraction.  She has risen above that.  Pelosi is now a dangerous distraction to the Obama agenda that gives life to the Republicans and emboldens dissent on every issue she and the Democrats are pushing.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she was misled about the use of "enhanced interrogation techniques."

Above: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she was misled about the use of “enhanced interrogation techniques.”

The president needs to ask Pelosi to resign. Now.

Pelosi is doing more harm than the former head of GM, who Obama gleefully discharged.

From May 19:
Pelosi Is Now Obama’s Biggest Anchor, Liability

If Obama does not do that — if he fails to ask Pelosi to step down or he delays action — he will harm his own chances of future success.

Keeping the interrogation debate fueled, as Pelosi did today, can easily kill all chances to get a health care bill this year.

If the president asks for Pelosi to resign, he still has some hope of getting his agenda and his administration back on track.

Pelosi took the lead on the “stimulus” earlier this year, and so far Obama has not taken any heat for the sorry details contained in that bill.

Now Pelosi has said she’ll be the lead sled dog on health care: which should not please Obama, Rahm Emanuel or any red blooded American one bit.

This is a time for Democrat discipline — a trait that party is not known for.

By keeping Pelosi, Obama risks undisciplined, lurching action in the House of Representatives — where he enjoys a huge Democrat majority that should be translating into rapid fire, disciplined action on all front.

In stead, it is now a safe bet that Republicans will join Pelosi in her request for a “Truth Commission” — and that train can go in any number of uncontrollable and unpredictable paths.

Pelosi has mixed politics and national security and national intelligence issues into an untenable Gordian Knot.

Her own staff has already threatened other Democrats not to initiate ethics complaints.

Pelosi has only been allowed to continue her questionable practices because of an understanding, all Obama loving media.

Ms. Pelosi has abused her office and sacrificed what little confidence the American people had in the Congress to change the tone and move forward: not look back.

And she has done so by lying and by asking us all to lose trust and faith in the American intelligence service…..

CIA Enhanced Interrogation Technique Memos Requested By Cheney Will Not Be Made Public

May 14, 2009

The CIA is now saying the interrogation technique memos that former Vice President Dick Cheney has requested be released will be kept away from the public.

After President Obama released some of the so called “torture memos,” Cheney said all the memos should be made public.  He said he specifically recalled two memos which showed how valuable those interrogations had been to U.S. national security.
.

The agency’s statement:

The process for Mandatory Declassification Review is governed by Executive Order 12958, as amended. That Order excludes from review information that is the subject of pending litigation. The two documents that former Vice President Cheney sought contain information that falls into that category.”

“For that reason—and that reason only—CIA did not accept Mr. Cheney’s request for a Mandatory Declassification Review. The Agency simply followed the Executive Order. This request was handled in accordance with normal practice by CIA professionals with long experience in information management and release. It was for them a straightforward issue.”

Pelosi Lied About Her Role as An Accomplice to Waterboarding

May 14, 2009

Someone important appears not to be telling the truth about her knowledge of the CIA’s use of enhanced interrogation techniques (EITs). That someone is Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. The political persecution of Bush administration officials she has been pushing may now ensnare her.

Here’s what we know. On Sept. 4, 2002, less than a year after 9/11, the CIA briefed Rep. Porter Goss, then House Intelligence Committee chairman, and Mrs. Pelosi, then the committee’s ranking Democrat, on EITs including waterboarding. They were the first members of Congress to be informed.

In December 2007, Mrs. Pelosi admitted that she attended the briefing, but she wouldn’t comment for the record about precisely what she was told. At the time the Washington Post spoke with a “congressional source familiar with Pelosi’s position on the matter” and summarized that person’s comments this way: “The source said Pelosi recalls that techniques described by the CIA were still in the planning stage — they had been designed and cleared with agency lawyers but not yet put in practice — and acknowledged that Pelosi did not raise objections at the time.”

Daily Obama Photo Op: Sri Lanka (But The Big News Today Was His Reversal on Detainee Photos)

May 13, 2009

President Obama made his daily photo op for TV and others today to announce that he calls upon the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka to lay down their weapons.

Good luck!

And most Americans might ask: Who cares and where is that?

It was almost as if an afterthought snuck into the president’s delivery when he explained why he had decided not to release the so called “detainee abuse” photos….

Many in the media have said the president came to this decision on his own but Fox News said the decision was heavily influenced by a huge outcry from the Pentagon…..
