Hezbollah Has an Idea for Obama on Gitmo: Offers To Kill Prisoners

May 22, 2009

Here’s why Gitmo is so terrible: other people in other nations are appauled at the U.S. for such terrible places as Gitmo.

But in Lebanon today, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said what he would do to spies from Israel: he’d kill them.
.

“In the name of the families of martyrs, of the wounded and of those who lost their homes… I demand that the death penalty is handed down to the agents who provided information that lead to all these things,” Nasrallah, said while speaking via video-link to a rally in Lebanon rally.

The speech was meant to commemorate the ninth anniversary of Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon.

Forget Cheney, Obama Has Trouble On Gitmo: From Judith Miller, Michelle Malkin, Joe Biden…..

May 22, 2009

Holy Cow!  Judth Miller, late of the new York Times, completely agrees with Michelle Malkin on the Obama Gitmo Non-Plan.

On Fox News Channel on Friday afternnoon, Miller said putting the likes of Gitmo terrorists in with the U.S. prison population “would cause real problems.”

Like Michelle Malkin, Miller discusses the “graduate education” bad guys can get in U.S. prisons.

“His push to transfer violent Muslim warmongers into our civilian prisons – where they have proselytized and plotted with impunity– will only make the problem worse,” Malkin wrote of Obama’s idea to put Gitmo terrorists into U.S. prisons.

Even Joe Biden balked at the President’s plan.

“But, look, what the president said is that this is going to be hard. It’s like opening Pandora’s Box. We don’t know what’s inside the box,” Biden said.

He also said that “to the best of my knowledge” the number of prisoners “who are a real danger who are not able to returned or tried” has “not been established” by the Obama administration.

So he basically just confirmed his predecessor Dick Cheney’s analysis that the decision was taken “with little deliberation, and no plan”.

Biden on Obama’s Gitmo “Plan”: “It’s Like Opening Pandora’s Box”

Speaking to reporters on the final day of his tour of the Balkans, Vice President Joe Biden acknowledged the administration still hasn’t figured out what to do with all the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay but predicted that it will still meet its deadline of closing the prison within a year. “I think so,” Biden said, when asked about the January 2010 deadline. “But, look, what the president said is that this is going to be hard. It’s like opening Pandora’s Box. We don’t know what’s inside the box.”

Obama ‘Distracted’ by Biden’s ‘Indiscipline,’ Book Asserts

The Telegraph, London

Thank goodness for Vice President Joe Biden. In one of the few amusing parts of the Wanda Sykes comedy routine at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, she said: “God forbid that Joe Biden falls into the hands of terrorists….We’re done. Oh, they won’t even have to torture him. All they have to do is go, ‘How’s it going, Joe?'”

Indeed. It seems that all a reporter has to do to find out about the pickle Barack Obama’s is really in over his promise to close the Guantanamo Bay prison is to ask the veep, who was talking to the press at Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo on the final day of his trip to the Balkans.

So will Obama fulfill his vow – announced amid great fanfare in an executive order on day two of his presidency – to close the facility by January 2010? “I think so,” Biden responded, according to Newsweek’s Holly Bailey.

So perhaps he will. Or perhaps not. We’ll see.

Biden continued: “But, look, what the president said is that this is going to be hard. It’s like opening Pandora’s Box. We don’t know what’s inside the box.”

Moralist-in-Chief Obama is President Above-It-All

May 22, 2009

Put Barack Obama in front of a teleprompter and one thing is certain — he’ll make himself appear the most reasonable person in the room.

Rhetorically, he is in the middle of any debate, perpetually surrounded by finger-pointing extremists who can’t get over their reflexive combativeness and ideological fixations to acknowledge his surpassing thoughtfulness and grace.

By Rich Lowry
National Review

This is how Obama, whose position on abortion is indistinguishable from NARAL’s, can speechify on abortion at Notre Dame and come away sounding like a pitch-perfect centrist. It’s natural, then, that his speech at the National Archives on national security should superficially sound soothing, reasonable, and even a little put-upon (oh, what President Obama has to endure from all those finger-pointing extremists).

But beneath its surface, the speech — given heavy play in the press as an implicit debate with former Vice President Dick Cheney, who spoke on the same topic at a different venue immediately afterward — revealed something else: a president who has great difficulty admitting error, who can’t discuss the position of his opponents without resorting to rank caricature, and who adopts an off-putting pose of above-it-all self-righteousness.

We’re No Longer Thinking Trough Problems? Gitmo, Stimulus, Cap and Trade are Just a Few Examples

May 22, 2009

If you had fallen asleep, say, last November, only to wake up this week, you might ask: “When did we stop thinking through the solutions to our problems?”

The answer, one might suppose, could be that if you have a Democrat in the White House and a huge Democrat majority in the House and Senate, no further thinking is required.

For example: after two years of preaching about the immorality of Gitmo, the Congress rejected the funding the White House requested to close Gitmo because they weren’t given a plan on where to put the prisoners.

So the President yesterday gave another hour-long sermon on Gitmo.  To which Harry Reid said, “We still need a plan.”

Not only that, the plan in the speech hasn’t been well thought out.

“There’s a whole contingent of issues that have to be well thought out before we ever agreed to bring inmates of that caliber into our system,” said Bryan Lowry, president of the National Council of Prison Locals, which represents federal correctional officers.

The stimulus, which spread out $787 billion of taxpayers money like manure on the land wasn’t read by any “lawmaker” that any member of the media has found.  Now Henry Waxman has offered to cure this problem on the Cap and Trade Bill: he’s hired a speed reader.

Rip van Winkle might just elect to go back to sleep fearing that this is going from really bad to really worse….

Here’s a thought: reactivate Alcatraz, put the Gitmo prisoners there and they can vote for Nancy Pelosi…..

Even Joe Biden says we aren’t thinking:

The fact that American “lawmakers” are busy passing bills that they haven’t read seems to go hand in glove with a White House that hasn’t thought through the implications of many things.  The Obama Bow to the Saudi King smacks of obeisance; defined as “bending the head or body or knee as a sign of reverence or submission or shame;” or “the act of obeying; dutiful or submissive behavior with respect to another person.”

Is this what the White House wanted?  It is what they got.

The Brit Prime Minister got movies on CD from the President of the United States: not a very symbolic gift.  One was “Star Wars.”  And nobody in the White House even checked to see if these CDs can be watched in the UK (they use different digital formatting: the CDs given by Obama are “blank” on UK machines).

Don’t forget, many Presidents of the United States do their work in the Oval Office on the “Resolute Desk” which is made from the timbers of a Royal Navy Warship.  That’s symbolism.

JFK among otheres used the “Resolute Desk” — a gift from the UK.  Obama returned one gift from the UK: A Statue of Sir Winston Churchill.

The president gave the Queen of England an IPod — made in China.

The Secretary of State in this Obama Administration gave her Russian counterpart a giant red button which was supposed to be marked “reset.”  But the word was not spelled correctly or was just flat out the wrong word.  Besides:  to most Russians a giant red button is for launching nuclear weapons…..

So what are we resetting to with Russia?  Ask Joe Biden: it was his idea apparently to make the ‘reset” button.  Joe “Advisor to Many Presidents” Biden should have asked the staff to discuss with him how Vladimir Putin might reset — back to his KGB roots?

Bush Waterboarded Three Terrorists; Obama Shot Three Pirates — War is Hell

May 22, 2009

Just yesterday President Barack Obama was on a moral crusade explaining how reprehensible it was for George W. Bush to hold prisoners at Gitmo and to use enhanced interrogation techniques to extract information from some.  Waterboarding was used on three of the worst that could have had information and plans about killing tens of thousands of Americans, former Vice President Dick Cheney says….

I am a little confused then, by this same President, at the commissioning ceremony at the U.S. Naval Academy today, raising the issue of Navy snipers killing three pirates off the coast of Somalia earlier this year.  Those pirates were in danger of harming only one American — and their track record was of never harming any hostages — before or since.

The pirates were teens looking for money.  The President ordered their execution.  Three of them.

“We uphold our fundamental principles and values not just because we choose to, but because we swear to — not because they feel good, but because they help keep us safe,” the President said today.

Death by sniper is an evil we tolerate in war.  In the case of the Somali pirates?  Who knows.  But it is certainly not cause for gloating pride.

Gitmo and waterboarding brings no joy.  But neither does the execution of pirates.

The fourth pirate was captured, read his rights and is in New York going through the Obama plan explained for all terrorists and overseas evil doers yesterday.

So the Obama “read ’em their rights and get them into court” plan has worked exactly 25% of the time for him so far.

The other three — the 75% — are dead.

But Obama feels it is necessary to lecture the Bush Administration…..

Hezbollah says Biden visit interferes in election

By BASSEM MROUE, Associated Press Writer

BEIRUT – Vice President Joe Biden reaffirmed strong American support for Lebanon’s government Friday as the deeply divided country prepares for crucial elections in two weeks that could see the pro-Western faction ousted by Iranian-backed Hezbollah and its allies.

Hezbollah has accused Washington of trying to influence the June 7 vote in favor of the pro-Western faction that dominates the government. The militant group said the visits by Biden and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton a month ago raised “strong suspicion and amounted to a clear and detailed interference in Lebanon’s affairs.”

Biden is the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit Lebanon in more than 25 years. Pro-Iranian militants targeted Americans with bombings and kidnappings in the 1980s during the civil war, leading to a 12-year U.S. ban on citizens traveling to the country that was lifted in 1997.

With Biden’s visit following so closely after Clinton’s, the attention from President Barack Obama‘s administration underscores concerns about a possible win by Hezbollah, which the U.S. considers a terrorist group.

“Lebanon has suffered terribly from war and we have a real opportunity now … for peace,” Biden said after talks with President Michel Suleiman. “So I urge those who think about standing with the spoilers of peace not to miss this opportunity to walk away from the spoilers.”

Muslim Terrorists Offer To Lay Down Their Arms, Renounce Terrorism, To Thank Obama For Closing Gitmo

May 22, 2009

We’ll be waitning to see that headline.  Forever.

Yesterday President Obama said (again):

“Instead of serving as a tool to counter-terrorism, Guantanamo became a symbol that helped al Qaeda recruit terrorists to its cause. Indeed, the existence of Guantanamo likely created more terrorists around the world than it ever detained.”

Former Vice President Cheney said:

“Another term out there that slipped into the discussion is the notion that American interrogation practices were a “recruitment tool” for the enemy. On this theory, by the tough questioning of killers, we have supposedly fallen short of our own values. This recruitment-tool theory has become something of a mantra lately, including from the President himself. And after a familiar fashion, it excuses the violent and blames America for the evil that others do. It’s another version of that same old refrain from the Left, “We brought it on ourselves.”

If terrorists are delighted that Gitmo is closing it will be because they are now going to live on U.S. soil with the hope of meeting even more people they can recruit to their cause, as Michelle Malkin points out….

National Security: Obama says he’s undoing ‘mess’ left for him; Cheney disagrees

May 21, 2009

“We are cleaning up something that is, quite simply, a mess, a misguided experiment that has left in its wake a flood of legal challenges that my Administration is forced to deal with on a constant, almost-daily basis, and that consumes the time of government officials whose time should be spent on better protecting our country,” President Obama said, referring to Gitmo, the enhanced interrogation techniques and the military tribunals.

President Barack Obama gave a national security speech today, laying out his position on Gitmo, interrogations and terrorist.

White House: “It Was a Mistake” To Set Up Gitmo. Really?

President Barack Obama
APSaid former U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel and New York Daily News columnist Ralph Peters, “This did not sound like our president.  It sounded like some lawyer….”

“Obama should get on with governing,” Peters said, “not worrying about the comfort of terrorist prisoners.”

Former Vice President Dick Cheney’s speech, called a rebuttal, was scheduled before Obama’s and without knowledge of Obama’s text.

Cheney said only three men were “waterboarded” and all had vital information needed to prevent further attacks.  Cheney asked that the documents showing how the prisoners responded to EIT’s be released.

Cheney was undoubtedly sure of what the president was expected to say.

“People who consistently distort the truth in this way are in no position to lecture anyone about ‘values,'” Cheney said.

“We sought, and we in fact obtained, specific information on terrorist plans,” said Cheney.

“To completely rule out enhanced interrogation methods in the future is unwise in the extreme. It is recklessness cloaked in righteousness, and would make the American people less safe. The administration seems to pride itself on searching for some kind of middle ground in policies addressing terrorism. They may take comfort in hearing disagreement from opposite ends of the spectrum. If liberals are unhappy about some decisions, and conservatives are unhappy about other decisions, then it may seem to them that the President is on the path of sensible compromise. But in the fight against terrorism, there is no middle ground, and half-measures keep you half exposed. You cannot keep just some nuclear-armed terrorists out of the United States, you must keep every nuclear-armed terrorist out of the United States. Triangulation is a political strategy, not a national security strategy. When just a single clue that goes unlearned … one lead that goes unpursued … can bring on catastrophe – it’s no time for splitting differences. There is never a good time to compromise when the lives and safety of the American people are in the balance.”

“Apparently using the term “war” where terrorists are concerned is starting to feel a bit dated. So henceforth we’re advised by the administration to think of the fight against terrorists as, quote, “Overseas contingency operations.” In the event of another terrorist attack on America, the Homeland Security Department assures us it will be ready for this, quote, “man-made disaster” – never mind that the whole Department was created for the purpose of protecting Americans from terrorist attack.

And when you hear that there are no more, quote, “enemy combatants,” as there were back in the days of that scary war on terror, at first that sounds like progress. The only problem is that the phrase is gone, but the same assortment of killers and would-be mass murderers are still there. And finding some less judgmental or more pleasant-sounding name for terrorists doesn’t change what they are – or what they would do if we let them loose.”

Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia had a pretty good take on the two speeches:

“Salesmanship versus policy preference. The better salesman is unquestionably Barack Obama, and his credibility advantage gets the administration’s proposals a fair hearing by the voters. Dick Cheney is firmly tied to an unpopular, discredited administration, and it is tough for many people to ignore the messenger so that they can fairly evaluate the message. Yet the other fundamental is at the heart of the President’s problem. Obama is trying to sell a disliked policy. Nothing in his speech acted as an antidote to the NIMBY response that has overwhelmed his high minded argumentation for closing Guantanamo and bringing most detainees to the U.S. If the Republicans had a more appealing spokesperson for their point of view, they might prevail. If the President had a more appealing policy, he might prevail. The party that changes this equation in its favor over the coming months may win the day on this critical matter.”

From Stephen Dinan
The Washington Times

Accusing President Obama of giving Americans “less than half the truth,” former Vice President Dick Cheney said Thursday tough interrogation tactics worked, and said the tactics had the approval of members of Congress including current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The former vice president said the president’s attempt to find a middle ground that angers the right and the left is compromising American security: “in the fight against terrorism, there is no middle ground, and half-measures keep you half-exposed.”

Mr. Cheney said tough interrogation tactics “were legal, essential, justified, successful and the right thing to do.”

National Security: Rove Praises Obama for Listening to CIA, Pentagon and Growing Weary of MoveOn, Code Pink and ACLU

May 21, 2009

Barack Obama inherited a set of national-security policies that he rejected during the campaign but now embraces as president. This is a stunning and welcome about-face.

For example, President Obama kept George W. Bush’s military tribunals for terror detainees after calling them an “enormous failure” and a “legal black hole.” His campaign claimed last summer that “court systems . . . are capable of convicting terrorists.” Upon entering office, he found out they aren’t.

He insisted in an interview with NBC in 2007 that Congress mandate “consequences” for “a failure to meet various benchmarks and milestones” on aid to Iraq. Earlier this month he fought off legislatively mandated benchmarks in the $97 billion funding bill for Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mr. Obama agreed on April 23 to American Civil Liberties Union demands to release investigative photos of detainee abuse. Now’s he reversed himself. Pentagon officials apparently convinced him that releasing the photos would increase the risk to U.S. troops and civilian personnel.

Throughout his presidential campaign, Mr. Obama excoriated Mr. Bush’s counterinsurgency strategy in Iraq, insisting it could not succeed. Earlier this year, facing increasing violence in Afghanistan, Mr. Obama rejected warnings of a “quagmire” and ordered more troops to that country. He isn’t calling it a “surge” but that’s what it is. He is applying in Afghanistan the counterinsurgency strategy Mr. Bush used in Iraq.

As a candidate, Mr. Obama promised to end the Iraq war by withdrawing all troops by March 2009. As president, he set a slower pace of drawdown. He has also said he will leave as many as 50,000 Americans troops there.

These reversals are both praiseworthy and evidence that, when it comes to national security, being briefed on terror threats as president is a lot different than placating MoveOn.org and Code Pink activists as a candidate. The realities of governing trump the realities of campaigning.
