China says rich nations must cut emissions by 40%; offers no Chinese cuts

May 21, 2009

China confirmed Thursday that it will demand rich nations cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent from 1990 levels by 2020 in upcoming global climate change negotiations.

In a position paper published for negotiations to be held in Copenhagen in December, China — one of the world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases that cause global warming — did not commit to any legally binding reductions.

Developed countries shall undertake to reduce their GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions in aggregate by at least 40 percent below their 1990 level by 2020,” said the paper, posted on China’s planning agency’s website.

“Developed countries shall take responsibility for their historical cumulative emissions and current high per capita emissions to change their unsustainable way of life and to substantially reduce their emissions.”

The call for a 40-percent cut by rich countries has previously been mentioned in state media, but Thursday’s document spells out the demand as official Chinese government policy.

The December negotiations are aimed at hammering out a new climate change pact to replace the Kyoto protocol that expires in 2012.

The European Union has said it would slash emissions by 20 percent by 2020 compared with the 1990 level and raise the target to 30 percent if others set similarly ambitious targets.

State press reports earlier said China was prepared to commit to improved energy efficiency as its contribution to the talks, but such targets were not set out in the position paper.

The energy-guzzling nation pledged four-percent annual cuts in the amount of energy used per unit of gross domestic product from 2006-2010, but so far those targets have been missed.

Developed nations must also ramp up funding for clean energy technology to developing nations, the position paper said.

As a developing nation China under Kyoto did not accept cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, which are blamed for global warming, higher sea levels and other potentially disastrous changes in the climate.

“Fully aware of the seriousness and urgency of climate change and with a deep sense of responsibility for the long-term development of mankind, China is firmly committed to sustainable development,” the position paper said.

“In the face of international financial crisis, China remains determined to take unrelenting efforts to address climate change.”

[According to the U.N., China is a developing country and not a developed country and thus does not have to cut emissions the way others do.  China has a population of 1.3 billion.  The U.S. population is 300 million…]

China’s Bloodshed in Tiananmen Should Be Remembered By “White China Day”

May 21, 2009

Wang Dan, a key figure in the 1989 pro-democracy protests in China, said Thursday he hoped the nation would be “covered in white” to mark the anniversary of the bloody Tiananmen crackdown.

“We are promoting a campaign called ‘White Clothes Day,'” Wang, who was jailed for years in China before being exiled, told AFP from Taiwan, where he was staying temporarily to continue his fight for democracy.

“That means we appeal to Chinese people to wear white clothes (the colour of mourning in China) on June 4 to remember June 4, and we hope that on that day, we can witness a China covered in white,” he explained.

Studying at Peking University in 1989, Wang was first on a list of 21 most wanted students in China after the army cracked down on the Tiananmen demonstrations, killing hundreds, and possibly thousands.

After being arrested, Wang was sentenced to four years in prison in 1991 and freed in 1993. He was re-arrested in 1995 after continuing to campaign for human rights and democracy and sentenced the following year to a further 11 years in jail.

But in 1998, he was exiled to the United States where he continued his fight for democracy in his country.

“We are also inviting over 50 former participants of the 89 movement to get together again after 20 years in Washington DC to have a candle ceremony,” Wang said, adding exiled dissidents would hold a press conference on June 4.

Chinese authorities have reinforced security and the surveillance of dissidents in the country as the ultra-sensitive anniversary approaches, fearing trouble.

Obama CAFE Standard, Auto Company Bailouts “Great For Government and Auto Makers.” Consumers?

May 20, 2009

I thought the customer was king?  No more.

Interviewed on Fox News, Beau Boeckmann of Galpin Ford in Los Angeles said, “The president’s new fuel standards are a win-win for the government and the auto companies.”

Boeckmann seemed gleeful at what he had just said.

But what about the CONSUMER?  Not to mention the U.S. Union Auto Worker — an endangered species.

Here is the problem: we are no longer a free market economy.  And even the Ford dealer doesn’t care.  Because the manufacturer and the government get more money.  But each “consumer” will pay about $1,300 more, a conservative estimate, for a smaller, more dangerous car with less get up and go….

The government is happy because it gets more of your tax money because the car costs more and the auto maker doesn’t much care: the government owns them and has bailed them out for 30 years of bad decision making already…..

One small problem is this: the way the Obama economic recovery and stimulus are going, nobody can afford a new car…..

And once China starts building millions of new cars for export to the USA — with workers earning just a dollar or two an hour — Beau Boeckmann of Galpin Ford in Los Angeles better learn Chinese….

China will produce all the carbon, build all the cars, own all the U.S. debt and control all the money….

While Obama Announces Oil Conservation Measures, China Surges Ahead To Gobble Up Available Reserves

May 19, 2009

China buys 300,000 barrels of Venezuelan crude every day, and is eager for more from the Latin American country as part of its global quest for a diverse range of energy supplies.

Today, Venezuela said to begin building the first joint Venezuelan-Chinese oil drilling platform in June, according to Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez.

China is buying up oil in Iran, Iraq, Russia, Africa and just about everywhere else.

China also has an extensive deep sea oil exploration effort ongoing which explains some of China’s recent high seas expansion and belligerence.

But not to worry: President Barack Obama will have us out of gas guzzling cars and into all kinds of fuel savers before long.

Obama can do this because he already owns a big chunk of Chrysler, will soon own GM, and may own Ford the way things are going.

The only profitable U.S. car company, Ford, produces the least efficient cars and will have to retool its fleet to meet the Obama standards….

China has a population of 1.3 billion and wants more oil to power its industry.  China now also produces more cars than the USA and wants to put Chinese butts in many new cars during the next ten years.  China is also boosting export of Chinese built cars around the globe and will export to the USA startuing next year….

The U.S. population is only 300 million but those folks will get to pay a lot more for cars that are said to be really clean and efficient…..

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is asking consumers to put their money — up to $1,300 per new vehicle by 2016 — behind his plan for higher efficiency standards for cars and trucks and tougher rules on their greenhouse gas emissions.

In return, Obama said Tuesday in unveiling the plan, drivers would make up the higher cost of more fuel-efficient, cleaner vehicles by buying less gas at the pump. It would take just three years to pay off the investment and would, over the life of a vehicle, save about $2,800 though better gas mileage, the president said.

While requiring that vehicle carbon dioxide emissions be reduced by about one-third by the target date, the plan also calls for the auto industry to build vehicles that average 35.5 miles per gallon. Government regulations have never before linked emission and fuel standards.

“The fact is, everyone wins,” Obama said during a Rose Garden ceremony attended by representatives of the auto industry and environmental groups as well as state and federal lawmakers.

In Berry’s World Four Years Hence: China Will Be the Only Thriving Superpower

May 19, 2009

We are staring to have this vision that four years from now all of America’s problems will be solved — except we’ll have no industry, overtaxed business will be struggling to survive and we’ll be burdened by a debt so large that “economic recovery” will be impossible all together.

We’ll have cleaner air and more people will have health insurance.  But the population will be declining and much poorer.

China will be the only super power.  And although China’s carbon emissions will be five times what they are now, the  GDP and living standard in China will be higher than ever — and taxes will be lower than ever.

Iran will have swallowed Israel and most of the Middle East so it can control the oil that is mostly going to Russia and China.

America, and most of Europe, will have stagnant economies that just struggle along but both will enjoy a kind of world leadership sanctity in doing the right thing.  Taxes will be way up: the sandard of living way down.  Drug use will skyrocket.  Most pregnancies will end in abortion.

Most Americans and Europeans will take their marching orders from the U.N.; but China will be the prosperous holdout to the world economy.

We’ll be in Berry’s World.  Obamaland.

I’m studying Chinese…..

China ready to join US as world power

May 18, 2009

David Miliband today described China as the 21st century’s “indispensable power” with a decisive say on the future of the global economy, climate change and world trade.

The foreign secretary predicted that over the next few decades China would become one of the two “powers that count”, along with the US, and Europe could emerge as a third only if it learned to speak with one voice.

The remarks, in a Guardian interview, represented the most direct acknowledgement to date from a senior minister, or arguably from any western leader, of China’s ascendant position in the global pecking order.

Miliband said a pivotal moment in China’s rise came at the G20 summit last month in London. Hu Jintao, China’s president, arrived as the head of the only major power still enjoying strong growth (expected to be 8% this year), backed by substantial financial reserves.

“The G20 was a very significant coming of economic age in an international forum for China. If you looked around the 20 people sitting at the table … what was striking was that when China spoke everybody listened,” Miliband said.

Obama Names Republican Rival Ambassador to China; The “Hillary Checkmate”?

May 16, 2009

It would be tough running for President of the United States while living in China.  Anybody knows that.

President Obama has selected Republican Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. to be his ambassador to China.

The announcement came on Saturday  at the White House.

David Plouffe, Obama’s 2008 campaign manager, described Huntsman as “the one person in that (Republican) party who might be a potential presidential candidate,” U.S. News and World Report reported earlier in May.untsman, who speaks Mandarin Chinese and has adopted a daughter from China, had been tipped as a potential rival to Obama in the 2012 presidential election.

Huntsman, 49, is a former deputy U.S. trade representative and ambassador to Singapore. A Mormon, he did missionary work in Taiwan, the Salt Lake Tribune reported

Does this cause anyone to ask, what ever happened to Hillary Clinton?  Why, she works for Obama as Secretary of State and is hardly in a position to challenge him in a campaign…

From Jonathan Martin
Politico

President Barack Obama’s decision to appoint Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman as ambassador to China Saturday doesn’t merely remove a likely challenger – it strips the Republican party of one of its few voices urging moderation.

Obama’s pick leaves the GOP without an obvious centrist presidential candidate two years before the primary jockeying begins in full. By dispatching Huntsman to Beijing, Obama is effectively trying to determine the sort of Republican he and his top advisers would like to face in 2012.

“Brilliant,” said GOP strategist Mark McKinnon of the appointment. “Keep your friends close and your enemies in China.”

China’s yuan ‘set to usurp US dollar’ as world’s reserve currency

May 15, 2009

The Chinese yuan is preparing to overtake the US dollar as the world’s reserve currency, economist Nouriel Roubini has warned.

By James Quinn, Wall Street Correspondent
The Telegraph, London

rofessor Roubini, of New York University’s Stern business school, believes that while such a major change is some way off, the Chinese government is laying the ground for the yuan’s ascendance.

Known as “Dr Doom” for his negative stance, Prof Roubini argues that China is better placed than the US to provide a reserve currency for the 21st century because it has a large current account surplus, focused government and few of the economic worries the US faces.

Obama: “We Can’t Keep Borrowing From China”

May 14, 2009

President Barack Obama, calling current deficit spending “unsustainable,” warned of skyrocketing interest rates for consumers if the U.S. continues to finance government by borrowing from other countries.

“We can’t keep on just borrowing from China,” Obama said at a town-hall meeting in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, outside Albuquerque. “We have to pay interest on that debt, and that means we are mortgaging our children’s future with more and more debt.”

Holders of U.S. debt will eventually “get tired” of buying it, causing interest rates on everything from auto loans to home mortgages to increase, Obama said. “It will have a dampening effect on our economy.”

The president pledged to work with Congress to shore up entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare and said he was confident that the House and Senate would pass health-care overhaul bills by August.

“Most of what is driving us into debt is health care, so we have to drive down costs,” he said.

Credit-Card Fees

Obama also prodded Congress to pass restrictions on credit- card issuers, saying consumers need “strong and reliable” protection from unfair practices and hidden fees.

“It’s time for reform that’s built on transparency, accountability, and mutual responsibility, values fundamental to the new foundation we seek to build for our economy,” the president said.

Russia to build 12 fighters for Vietnam

May 14, 2009

Russia has secured an order from Vietnam for 12 Su-30MK2 fighter jets worth more than 500 million dollars (368 million euros), the Vedomosti newspaper said, citing top aviation industry officials.

The contract with Russian state arms exporters Rosoboronexport was inked in January, according to the paper.

The supersonic fighter jets are to be sold without on-board weapons, and no time frame was given for the deal.

Contracts for missiles and other arms to equip the planes are worth hundreds of millions of dollars more, the daily reported.

Just last month, media reported Russia had sealed a 1.8-billion-dollar deal for the sale of six submarines to the Vietnamese navy.

With these contracts Vietnam becomes one of Russia’s five largest arms clients, alongside India, Algeria, Venezuela and China, Vedomosti said.

The weapons trade has proved one of Russia’s most profitable sectors since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
