More federal funding for ACORN despite indictments

May 24, 2009

Under the guise of due process concerns, congressional Democrats have opened the way for organizations with criminal histories to gain greater access to taxpayer funds. Exhibit A here is the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now (ACORN), now under investigation in at least 14 states for voter registration fraud.

Earlier this month, House Financial Services Committee Chairman Rep. Barney Frank, D-MA, sponsored an amendment to the $140 million Mortgage Reform and Anti-Predatory Lending Act. The Frank measure allowed organizations being investigated by state or federal authorities on corruption charges to receive federal funds as long as they avoid conviction. Frank argued that his amendment, which was approved by the House, protected the presumption of innocence in federal spending.

But federal ethics rules have long stipulated that either an actual or apparent conflict of interest can put a government employee at risk of prosecution for ethics violations.  So, if the Frank amendment becomes law, the federal government will have a double standard, ignoring the presumption of innocence for its employees with apparent conflicts of interest, but extending the presumption to its funding recipients.

ACORN claims to be non-partisan, but it and its many affiliates have ardently supported Democratic incumbents and candidates at all levels of government.

California’s a Democratic State. ACORN Got Handouts; Where’s Ours?

May 22, 2009
ACORN and SEIU are loyal pawns of the Democratic money grabbig maching.  They have gotten a lot of benefit for their loyalty.  Now you can’t blame California for asking, “Where’s our bailout?”

Democrats are pushing for federal loan guarantees while Republicans are opposed, leaving Congress’ largest delegation with little power to persuade the White House to come to the state’s rescue.

Reporting from Washington — California has by far the largest delegation in Congress, almost 10% of the membership. Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House, is a Californian, as are five of its committees’ chairs — a collection of powerful positions unmatched by any state. The state’s two senators chair important committees, and one holds a coveted seat on the Appropriations Committee.

And in terms of electoral politics, California has been among the most reliably Democratic major states, as well as by far the party’s most generous source of campaign cash.

Media: Lying, Ignoring The Truth, Arrogance is Ruining Liberal Voices

May 20, 2009

Since the election of Barack Obama last autumn, one word can best characterize liberal media and Democrat politicians: arrogance.

People usually can’t cruise around fueled only by arrogance for long.  And now it seems that liberal media and Democrats will have to learn a new survival skill: humility.

The New York Times is a case in point.  The Old Gray Lady has spun liberal news for so long that people just yawn when the paper is accused of a liberal “slant.”

But that paper went over the line by ignoring the Obama ties to ACORN, Ayers, Jeremiah Wright and others.

And sending a “newsman” to a president’s news conference armed with the question, “what did you find enchanting about the White House” is shameful.

We hope the New York Times gets purchased by the Taliban.  At least then we’ll all know why it is so “out there.”

Even Newsweek is completing a makeover: More Obama (just fewer readers).  Call it Newsweek Lite.

CNN?

Anderson Cooper is just now realizing his ‘teabagging” remark was stupid, offensive and unnecessary?

He was supposed to be a news man?

The inability to fill dead air intelligently often leads to “blurting out the truth” and we all learn what the talking head really thinks about.

NBC has become the National Barack Channel.  Ditto MSNBC.

But when faced with viewers and readers complaints, liberal media either says they are unbiased or just giving the public what it wants.

New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller recently said:

“We are agnostic as to where a story may lead; we do not go into a story with an agenda or a preconceived notion. We do not manipulate or hide facts to advance an agenda. We strive to preserve our independence from political and economic interests . . . We do not work in the service of a party, or an industry, or even a country. When there are competing views of a situation, we aim to reflect them as clearly and fairly as we can.”

That’s bull.  From a deer in the headlights.

Victor Davis Hanson writes, “Perhaps the media doesn’t get it that the American people can more easily take the bias of an attack-dog, go-for-the jugular media that claims it is the watchdog of the public trust and therefore must skin the president, far more than such carnivores suddenly becoming sheepish and obsequious, as ministers of truth, rephrasing and repackaging the party line.”

Call To Congress To End Funding To ACORN

May 14, 2009

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann called on Congress Thursday to block ACORN’s access to federal housing funds, citing repeated charges of voter registration fraud against the low-income advocacy group.

The Republican congresswoman, flanked by an ACORN whistleblower and an attorney who worked on an ACORN case in Pennsylvania, escalated a media offensive against the group, which is a favorite target of conservatives who claim liberals are unjustly protecting a dysfunctional organization by allowing it access to taxpayer money.

“ACORN, as you know, is no stranger to the spotlight,” Bachmann said outside the Capitol. “Yet no matter how many times prosecutors investigate and even indict ACORN and their employees, they emerge unblemished as far as the federal government is concerned from having access to federal tax dollars.”

Bachmann, who hit the same themes in an op-ed in the Washington Times on Wednesday, complained that House Democrats killed her amendment to block organizations indicted for voter fraud from receiving federal housing money. She said ACORN has received at least $53 million in tax dollars since 1994, and that she will have new legislation in the coming weeks.

Glenn Beck Says ACORN Ninjas Are Trying to Kill Him

May 13, 2009

Just in case there was any doubt as to Glenn Beck’s status as a paranoid charismatic who regards himself as a Christ-like figure, last night he predicted his own assassination on television.

Glenn.jpg Glenn Beck image by umfan23

It’s pretty straightforward, really: ACORN is an international conspiracy of poor people who threaten to take over the world with shoddy voter registrations. Anyone who speaks out against ACORN—including a dissident member of the organization’s Washington, D.C., arm who recently appeared on Beck’s show—is “in danger.”

Obama Special Friends, Union, Pressuring California on Budget

May 13, 2009

The budget deal that the Legislature grudgingly approved in February left few Californians unbruised. State programs were slashed and taxes and fees were hiked in an effort to close a $42-billion budget gap, causing many to decry the impact on vulnerable residents and struggling businesses. Some of those voices carried further than others, however. Now, the state could lose $6.8 billion in supplemental Medicaid dollars because of a complaint lodged by the union representing home healthcare workers, many of whom face reductions in their already low wages. Although we don’t like the cuts, we don’t think the federal government should use its leverage to pressure California on behalf of a well-connected group.

Counties negotiate the home healthcare workers’ wages and benefits, with the federal government covering half the cost and the state about a third. The state’s contribution is capped, however, so it doesn’t pay any share of the costs above $12.10 an hour. The budget deal lowers that cap to $10.10 on July 1. Twenty counties exceed the new cap, and some are contractually bound to make up for the loss in state dollars.

The Service Employees International Union, whose negotiators won those contracts, is now using them as ammunition against the wage reductions. The economic stimulus package that Congress enacted in mid-February offers billions of dollars to states to help them keep their healthcare programs for the poor from running short of cash. The bill includes a “maintenance of effort” clause to prevent states from using the new federal dollars to lower their spending on healthcare at counties’ expense. The SEIU argued that California’s cuts violated that clause, and at least one attorney at the federal Department of Health and Human Services has agreed.

“Democratic Party is Bought and Paid For By The Unions” Lawmaker Says

May 12, 2009

Republican Representative Darrell Issa from California says when California tried to lower its $20 billion deficit, it offered to cut the pay of health care workers.  Union health care workers of the Service Employees International Union or SEIU, Issa said, “ran to Washington to get Obama’s help.”

Image:Seiu logo.png

The Obama government then told California it would not get its stimulus money if the union workers didn’t get all their pay: the stimulus forbids such action against unions, the stimulus law says.

“But who wrote the stimulus?” Issa asks.  “The stimulus was written in the dark of night by the unions in Washington DC,” Issa said, with instructions from Nancy Pelosi and other key Democrat lawmakers.

Then the Obama rammed the stimulus through Congress to a vote.  No lawmakers admitted to reading the legislation which authorized the stimulus —  the biggest single pay out of federal money in one bill ever.

“At a time when other states are cutting expenses,” Issa said, “California is going in the wrong direction — and pushed there by the White House.”

“Issa also said California was the most unionized state and the state government in Sacramento was “bought and paid for by the unions.”

Issa said the unions see the growth of government in Washington and California as good for the unions.

The federal government is due to grow by tens of thousands of people this year with 20,000 Pentagon contract oversight people and more than 70,000 census takers topping the list.

The government of California is also growing.  Last year, the only major segments of the California economy to grow the were government workforce and health care….

California Says Unions Have Inappropriate Influence With Obama Administration

May 11, 2009

If there was any doubt about labor’s influence, look west to the state of California’s troubles. Officials in Governor Schwarzenegger’s administration say that the SEIU may have had inappropriate influence over the Obama Administration’s decision to withhold stimulus funds for California if the Governor did not undo a scheduled wage cut for workers who are part of the SEIU.

Officials from the Schwarzenegger administration said that they were troubled that the SEIU was included in a conference call between federal and state officials, who were reviewing the wage cut and stimulus funding. The SEIU had lobbied the federal government to intervene.

The state’s health and human services secretary, Kim Belshe, expressed concern over the Obama Administration inviting a siginificant stakeholder into federal-state government negotiatons. According to a list provided by California officials, participants in the conference call included an SEIU lawyer from Washington, D.C. and a California-based SEIU lobbyist and policy staffer.

As part of its budget deal, California legislators agreed to cut $74 million in wages for home health workers. That cut would lower the pay for home health workers – members of the SEIU – by two dollars an hour. The Obama Administration ruled that California must rescind the wage cut or lose $6.8 billion in stimulus funds. Undoing the wage cuts will require a two-thirds vote in the state legislature, which The Wall Street Journal compared to “moving the Sierra Nevadas.”

States Acting Like Tea Party Goers: Fighting Obama’s Spending, Borrowing Recovery Plan: Want Tax and Spending Cuts; Resisting Stimulus

May 9, 2009

There seems to be a real standoff in the works between states that can’t spend and borrow more and the president who has staked his reputation and the recovery on the premise that spending and borrowing is the path toward economic recovery…Four or five states is not a revolt but it bears watching…
.
We reported here yesterday an interesting turn of events in California.  Cash strapped, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger pushed ahead with wage cuts for unionized home healthcare workers approved in February by state lawmakers as part of the state budget.

Then the Obama administration threatened to rescind billions in stimulus money if Gov. Schwarzenegger and lawmakers did not restore those wage cuts….

In other words, Obama is doing the same thing to California that he is doing to the auto and banking industries. Do what we want, because we gave you money. You took money, therefore we own you. The citizens of California are unimportant. The projects that would be paid for with the $7 billion, also not important. The taxpayers, many yet to be born, that are paying for the stimulus cash, definitely not important. The home health care union workers, who I’m sure would rather take a pay cut than lose their jobs, they’re important.

However, they are important only to a certain extent. The workers belong to SEIU, which is a branch of ACORN. As reported in the L.A. Times….

ACORN Won’t Go Away; Neither Will Accusations

May 9, 2009

It’s almost as if the 2008 presidential campaign never ended: The community organizing group known as ACORN continues to find itself in legal jeopardy and the Republican Party continues to spend an inordinate amount of time obsessing about it.

Six months after an election where the controversial liberal group became a partisan lightning rod, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now remains a prominent GOP target, a subject of intense, feverish pursuit seemingly out of proportion with the return on political investment.

By MICHAEL FALCONE
Consider the past week alone.

In the House, Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) and other GOP lawmakers called on the Census Bureau to sever ties with ACORN, one of several hundred organizations teaming up with the bureau to conduct the crucial Census count in 2010.

At the same time, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), one of ACORN’s most vocal opponents in Congress, tangled with Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) over an “ACORN amendment” she introduced that would have prohibited any organization indicted for voter fraud from receiving certain federal housing grants.

In the Senate, Republican David Vitter of Louisiana introduced his own amendment that sought to prohibit ACORN from receiving federal volunteer funds through the National Service Act. The Senate rejected it on Thursday.

Outside the legislative arena, Republicans also zeroed in on ACORN.

The Republican National Committee splashed on its home page a story about voter registration charges filed against ACORN in Nevada. The Florida GOP produced a YouTube video aimed at freshman Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson that shows a member of Grayson’s staff calling him the “Congressman from ACORN.”

On Friday, Americans for Limited Government, a conservative group, targeted several vulnerable Democratic freshmen by issuing individualized press releases slamming them for voting to fund “criminal enterprise ACORN.”

The list goes on and on.

At the heart of the GOP’s grievance is the belief that ACORN is a shady liberal front group that regularly engages in fraudulent voter registration activity or outright voter fraud. John McCain suggested as much in one of his debates with Barack Obama when he referred to ACORN by name and accused Obama of not fully explaining his association with the group.

“This could violate the most fundamental aspect of democracy and that is a free and fair election,” McCain said at the debate last October.
