Gingrich: Pelosi Knew About Waterboarding; Now Dems Create Atmosphere Akin to McCarthy Era

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Sunday called the legal debate surrounding former Bush administration officials over the issue of torture “as bitter a partisan attack as we’ve seen since the McCarthy era.”

During an appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” the Georgia Republican took aim at congressional Democrats for raising the prospect of legal action against former Bush administration officials who justified and carried out harsh interrogation techniques against suspected terrorists at detention facilities outside the U.S. Some Democrats on Capitol Hill have called on President Barack Obama to initiate a legal review of these tactics, with the possibility of jail time for those responsible.

Republicans, meanwhile, are raising questions about how much Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) knew about these tactics after a briefing from Bush administration officials while she still served as the ranking Democrat on the Intelligence Committee. On Sunday, Gingrich said the speaker “has a lot of explaining to do.”

Gingrich also pointed out that Pelosi has had tools at her disposal to end practices such as waterboarding since Democrats took power in 2007.
