We live in interesting times. Today Republican Senator Arlen Specter left the party of his lifetime and became a Democrat. Republican critics said the 79 year old Specter only wants to be on the “winning side,” he has “no principles.”
In the latest poll, Specter was way behind of his Republican challenger….
That’s an interesting take on a political situation on the same day that a political, moral and religious situation continues to simmer involving the University of Notre Dame and the President of the United States.
Notre Dame invited Barack Obama to the university’s commencement. The president says he’ll come. But those who believe in the principle that life begins at conception and abortion is murder have protested the university and asked them to withdraw their invitation to the pro-abortion Obama.
The university President Father Jenkins says the principle is this: Notre Dame will hear all views all the time and will not bar outside views even for abortion.
Last year the university hosted the play “The Vagina Monologues.”
The University of Notre Dame says its invitation doesn’t mean the university agrees with all of Obama’s positions. Do you think Notre Dame will throw a tarp over the Virgin Mary on top of the Golden Dome when Obama visits?
So now another person invited to share the stage with Obama at Notre Dame’s commencement has said she will not attend. That person is former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican Mary Ann Glendon.
Father Jonathan Morris, a commentator on the Fox News Channel who is based in the Vatican called Glendon “the leading lay Catholic voice in America.”
He said, “Notre Dame has lost sight of its real principles and has moved out of the mainstream of Catholic thought.”
He said the decision to invite Obama to Notre Dame seemed to him, “Based upon prestige and not principles.”
Glendon will not appear with Obama or at Notre Dame. Sounds like a decision based upon good principles.
Specter faced the Specter of defeat: and jumped ship to stay “in power.”
We like Glendon this day, for sure….Rumor has it you can count on her because she is a person of principles….and she gets them prioritized correctly….

April 28 (Bloomberg) — Mary Ann Glendon, a Harvard University Law Professor and former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, won’t accept an honor bestowed on U.S. Catholics by the University of Notre dame because President Barack Obama, who supports abortion rights, is also getting an honorary degree.
Notre Dame is acting in defiance of a 2004 request by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops that Catholic institutions refrain from honoring people “who act in defiance to our fundamental moral principals,” Glendon, 70, wrote in a letter to the Notre Dame, Indiana school, that turned down acceptance of the so-called Laetare Medal. Glendon’s letter was reported earlier by the Boston Globe.
Notre Dame invited Obama, a Democrat, to speak at the school’s May 17 commencement, and also plans to award him an honorary doctor of laws degree. Shortly after the schedule became public, Catholic groups and members of Notre Dame’s faculty began to protest the choice because of Obama’s support for abortion and embryonic stem cell research.
“We are, of course, disappointed that Professor Glendon has made this decision,” said Notre Dame’s President Rev. John Jenkins, a Catholic priest, in a statement on the school’s Web site. “It is our intention to award the Laetare Medal to another deserving recipient, and we will make that announcement as soon as possible.”
